The first words he heard, muttered by his clan’s healer’s assistant. He didn’t understand what the words spoken meant, but the tone stung.

Hyacintho was given grief from the start, his odd splotchy white and blue colors gave him nothing but pity and mocking words from his clan. His parents thought he might have had a sickness or disease, but his clan’s healers found nothing wrong. He hated it. Countless nights he cried himself to sleep, cursing his disgusting colors. It wasn’t fair. He didn’t ask to be given these genetics.

Not long after reaching his preteens, he started to pluck his feathers. He wanted them gone, and he didn’t care what the expense was. His parents found out, but they were too exhausted to do much for him. He was a coatl, with a white color. What could they do? Dull and monochrome colored plumage was seen as sickly, he would never be able to fit in with other coatls.
Which is what gave his mother an idea. In the middle of the night, she took her son away from their clan. She led him through territory after territory, until she found a clan willing to take her son in. She returned to her own, claiming her son had been kidnapped and she chased after them to try and save him.

Now, with the love and support of his new clan, Hyacintho has been able to see past his odd colors. He now embraces his uniqueness, and spends his days helping his clan mates when they start having doubts about their appearance and worth.
