I remember very little of where I come from these days. I’ve forgotten the names and the faces of the dragons I called both friends and enemies growing up, but the one thing I’ve never forgotten are the smells. I can still smell the aroma that followed my mother everywhere she went, a mix of flowers that she grew that she adored. I can smell the singed hide of my father, and the smell of copper that was always on his paws. I can’t remember what they look like, but I can remember their smells as clear as if I smell them now.

I was born nearly twenty five spins ago, in the cliffs of Focal Point that faced north, the visage of the Plaguebringer’s domain always within sight when I left the caves my birthclan called home. I was raised with my hatchmate, my youngest sister whose name I can’t even recall now. I remember being watched over by our older brother, the smell of parchment and ink always on him, but I don’t remember why. I don’t remember it at all, I can’t remember my childhood. I can’t remember their names, and I have trouble remembering all the times I spent with my sister when we were hatchlings, but I remember the smells of my family. I miss the ones I can’t remember.

I left as a young dragon, barely six spins old myself to go visit the Icewarden’s domain. I stayed in the Snowsquall Tundra, in a wicker cave system that was elaborate and full of other Tundra, with a smattering of Fae, Coatl, and Spirals among us as well. I stayed with the clan for years, happy to be surrounded among so many of my kind. I watched over all the hatchlings that came into and were borne of the clan, teaching them all how to forage or hunt with the dragon that also watched over them. I remember her smell more fondly than others, for eventually she was to be my mate. She was a Spiral, vibrant and excitable, always smelling of ice and pines, the scent that I came to associate with home.

The loss of my memories with her after her death weighs heavily on me. I can’t remember why I lost her, or how. I can’t remember how she even died. I barely remember the daughter she and I had, a Spiral like her mother. Jasmine, always smelling like the flower that didn’t grow anywhere near where she was born. Even now, trying to remember how I lost them both I can’t remember, I just remember that one day I could no longer find it in me to stay, so I began my journey home. I flew alone, letting my mind forget everything that I had just lost, forget the mate and the child I no longer had because of whatever reason. I wish I knew why they were gone, I wish I could remember them more.

It was only as I was making my way up to Focal Point from the south side that I noticed an island that I had never seen before. Or, at least I don’t remember its existence. It was growing later in the day, and I was growing tired after having flown all day already. I would have to rest soon and the island would be a perfect place to do so. It was only when I was closer that I saw a small figure dart up from the water close to the island before the dragon dove into the trees. I paused, hovering for a moment before deciding to investigate cautiously. I know by the shape the dragon was a Fae, and Fae’s are strong casters in large groups. If that Fae was warning the others on the island, there was no telling what I was in for.

As I flew over the island I tensed, waiting for the Fae to attack as I circled slowly. It occurred to me after several circles that they might be alone. It was unusual, but perhaps they were traveling like I was, returning home to their clan after a trip elsewhere. I didn't know for sure though, and if the Fae wasn't going to attack, maybe it was because they were scared of me. One Fae against a Tundra wasn't such good odds for the Fae. Fae's may have magic, but I knew I had the advantage with my fangs, though most of us Tundra hardly ever showed them.

I angled towards to large meadow that occupied part of the island and landed, smelling the faint scent of the island's occupant on the breeze. It was too faint for me to discern much besides the barest tinge of fear, so light in the mix of the stranger I had seen I almost missed it. Without them in sight, I laid down, reaching out to munch on some of the grass around me to satisfy some of the rumbling in my stomach before I slept. Perhaps tomorrow I would see this Fae again if they became less afraid, but if not there was no reason for me to linger any longer than that. I had a clan to return to, and a family that I could scarcely remember that I wanted to see once more.
