In the city of Muskeg, there is none with more power and influence than Gilderoy- Gilda, to her friend. Singular. Not that she’s particularly crass or hard to work with, no. Working with Gilderoy is a dream, she’s an effective manager, a prudent delegator, and a reliable boss. It’s just that she doesn’t have much time for non-work related relationships. Even her marriage is one build more on convenience than emotion. Despite being the land owner, she’s not particularly interested in the day-to-day of the city itself. Having finished laying down the infrastructure, she since abdicated her position to focus on her real goal: The Harpy Prince Casino & Cabaret. Of course, she still holds onto the deed- she’s not so foolish as to remove her hand entirely, just to loosen the grip. The city now runs on what is ostensibly a democracy, but Gilderoy holds the last say on all things- the city “leader” is often little more than an elected negotiator, chosen to handle any pushback Gilderoy may have against city changes. The Casino, however, is much more tightly controlled. Each staff member, from host to stage performers, are hand-picked and carefully curated. Shows are selected for a broad array of appeal, from the family-friendly to the grotesque, and should any fail to draw as expected, they are unceremoniously retired, regardless of seniority or time spent. As such, Gilderoy has developed a reputation for being hard-hearted- one not entirely undeserved. Her past is a matter of speculation- she brushes off all curiosity, carefully guarding herself from scrutiny. There is of course an active rumor mill- Perhaps she was a runaway princess, perhaps the inheritor of a vast fortune, perhaps a retired Exalt. Halcyon, once plyed with spirits and tipsier than usual, once spilled that her hands are rough and her arms are scarred under those gloves and coat. When Gilderoy found out she ended free drinks for employees for a solid two months. The rumors persisted, only now much quieter. Perhaps she was a slave, perhaps she was a simple farmgirl, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps… She never acknowledges the rumors. She neither confirms nor denies anything. She keeps her sights fully focused on the now, and the future. “Let the past rest.” She says. “We can’t do anything else for it.” A shining light in the shadows- a bustling city where once was only mud and crocodiles, a thriving business enriching herself and the community alike. This is the legacy Gilderoy has built for herself. This is the only one she will acknowledge. |

The namesake of the Casino, Rabadash is in many ways its unofficial mascot. Not that he often spends time amongst the people- he prefers to remain cooped up in his own chambers, as the crowds give him anxiety. When he does come out and about, he clings close to Gilderoy’s side. She is uncharacteristically gentle with him, more like a mother than she’s ever been to her blood children. He has only hazy memories of his life before the casino. The soft down of a nest, the cold exposure of a cage. He knows his flock is dead- he knows that they were wiped out in a clash far, far from where he lives now- but he can’t quite bring himself to mourn a family he doesn’t remember. |
