Onyx hatched in the Southern Icefields and was named after the mineral/gemstone black onyx, because his patchy hide looks like chunks of black onyx jutting out beneath swaths of white snow. Because of that, he's always adored collecting whatever bits of onyx he can find and carrying them back home to arrange in his lair.

From a young age Onyx showed a great aptitude for magic, able to conjure snowflakes and icicles at will regardless of how cold or warm the weather was - not that it ever got truly warm in the Southern Icefields - and had an almost insatiable thirst for knowledge and learning whatever he could. It wasn't long before his abilities strengthened, and he started being able to see visions in snow crystals.

On one of his excursions into the snowy fields Onyx befriended a Snowflake Nymph. He impressed her with his ability to create snowflakes on his own, and she decided to stay with him. He named her Crystal. She proved to be a studious, intelligent little creature, eager to help him learn more things more quickly. It was she who helped him hone his abilities further, to add a bit of finesse where he had none, and even helped him with enchantments to make his snowy creations last far longer than they would, even in warmer areas.
