Creative | Relaxed | Dreamer
Artifex has always lived in the Starfall Isles and has no desire to leave. He's not so much curious about the world as he is a dreamer, wanting to push the boundaries of creativity. He was hatched to parents who were loving but whose interests lay more with fighting than creating. Artifex grew up with a love of working with his claws. Instead of the metal that many Coatls chose to use as their primary material he fell in love with wood and woodwork. He would spend every waking hour that he could spare from lair duties whittling figures, making small boxes or fixing pieces of furniture. Soon, he was creating bigger and grander pieces, designing them himself instead of just fixing or modifying existing objects. He began to develop a signature - as he loves innovation, he tended towards crafting things that are unusual and often unexpected, but both functional and beautiful. Over the years he developed a real passion and skill for secret compartments in particular. He hides them in all kinds of furniture or even structures, creating and fitting everything from hidden drawers to secret passages and making spectacular puzzle boxes, which is his particular master skill.

Though he never really wanted to leave his original Arcane home Artifex came to feel that there had to be a lair out there that would truly appreciate his skills and passion; where he could dedicate more time to his crafts. As such, he would go wandering each day he had gathering duties, each time a little further from the lair, trying to find other clans or meet other dragons who felt the same as he regarding art and creativity. Poor Artifex, however, had no luck. That is, until one weekend it so happened that he chose to accompany some friends on a trip to a well-known Teahouse near The Observatory.

From the minute he entered the Teahouse, he was struck not just by the delicious scents and the warmth of the staff but also by the artistry of the whole place. The sprawling complex was beautifully decorated with paintings, drawings, murals, sculpture, fabrics and tapestry; the tablecloths and upholstery were all exquisitely embroidered. Each metal or porcelain tea set was forged or formed by claw, as was all crockery and cutlery. Not only were the Teahouse dragons excited that someone wanted to talk to them about their art and decor but the actual artists lived in the clan and were excited to come and speak to him personally, and Artifex was blown away. He noticed, however, that much of the furniture (especially the tables and benches, somewhat hidden under the tablecloths and cushions) were very plain - one or two even a bit wobbly from use! - so he offered to build them a whole new set of tables, chairs, cabinetry and other furniture if he might be able to stay for a while. To say the proposal was welcomed would be an understatement. Though the original agreement was to stay until the furniture was crafted, no-one really thought that Artifex would ever leave the lair.

He never has. He never will.

Artifex began his work in Caminus's workshop but found the heat too much for his finer wood pieces. Lacusnox, who came by the workshop to pick up some etching tools, heard this and offered to clear out part of the art studio she shares with Lacusvapos (who was a little grumpy about it, but gave in eventually). Straight away Artifex became rather enamoured by the laid back Wildclaw. As he toiled each day over the teahouse furniture he was also treated to the joy of her creative process - and, truly, watching her work was pure joy. So Artifex fell. In between crafting pieces of furniture he worked secretly on a gift for her - a mahogany-base paintbrush box inlaid with fourteen other kinds of wood to create a portrait of her on the lid, and a secret compartment in the base with a bracelet in it. When he finally got up the courage to give it to her, Lacusnox revealed that she'd been painting him at work from the other side of the studio because she was struck by how intensely yet serenely he went about his craft. They've been together ever since - she never takes off the bracelet and he wears a matching one - and often combine their skills to produce gorgeous carved entryways and painted furniture. Artifex has his own workshop now, but it is right next to the art studio and linked by hidden passages.

Artifex worked together with other members of the lair to create a network of passages, all hidden by doors or furniture expertly crafted by himself, to connect many areas of the lair. This allows easy, undisturbed access for researchers or artists who collaborate often, but also serves as a way for the more shy, quiet or damaged dragons to move around without having to deal with visitors, busy common areas or the noisy Teahouse.

Artifex is not quite as laid back as Lacusnox, but he's close. He does tend to become irritable if people are dismissive of art. He much prefers old ways of craftsmanship to new technologies; sometimes he's a little suspicious of new tech. When clean and groomed he's gorgeous to look at, though that doesn't happen very often - he's usually covered by a thin (or occasionally thick) layer of sawdust that he doesn't even notice. Like his mate, he gets on well with just about everybody.
