- - - Many members of the Institute are known to have been exiled or left their clan, some by choice some by force. But even the rule has some exceptions. Mangan is one of the few truly skilled mages of the Shifting Expanse, although many would beg to differ.

During his childhood he loved to spend his time conjuring up lighting and storms and soon found out that for a true lightning storm, one that would put fear into the hearts of their enemies, more than just finesse was needed. He needed more than strong lightning, thunder and dark clouds. He began to watch storms and ask others their reactions to them. The first breakthrough for the young pearlcatcher came during a conversation with a fellow clanmate about the Tangled wood and the darkness and fog there.

Interested he began to wander out into the other flights to study their magic. Shadow was the most interesting to him, where he also found his love for illusion and trickery. He began to understand that in order to create bigger magical works he needed to learn the art of subtlety and artifice, something the more shadow dragons had in their blood.
