Alnilam is the youngest of his siblings. As a hatchling, he received the most attention from his mother, Orion (though that wasn't much, anyway) and was envied by both of his siblings. He knew he wasn't smart or skilled, so to keep up with them he became perceptive of his surroundings, becoming the first to learn how to fly.

He showed much skill in his flight, often hanging with Kali to learn maneuvers and increasing his speed. when he heard that his mother was leaving the clan, Alnilam was determined to follow.... and he did just that. Without the knowledge of his siblings, his father, or his mother, Kalev flew off after Orion when she left, encouraged by Saraneth.

When he arrived at Clan Cairne's territory, he was quickly embraced by the duskguard - a lucky happenstance, as the dawnguard might have sent him away. His mother confronted him and tried to send him back home. However, the venerable patriarch of the clan intervened - much to his mate's displeasure. Alnilam was accepted and embraced, and introduced into the lineage as inheritor of the leadership, should any catastrophe ever befall Cairne himself.
