Biography

Codex
“...Alright, but no guarantees this isn't going to go horribly wrong - it's not on my head, if it does.”

For a plentiful breed and an uncommon one to have a Skydancer child together was an abnormality. Yet Codex broke from his egg with feathers sprouting from his wings; so different from his two Guardian sisters who hatched besides him; one a half hour before, the other a minute after.

It wasn't easy for him. His sisters always wanted to play-Search, or fantasize what - or who - their Charges could be. Sometimes he couldn't stand to be near them, their passion and longing for their charges making his antennae quiver and forehead ache, overwhelmed.

He didn't understand them, they didn't understand him. Maybe they never would, but they tried regardless. And that effort, that willingness to try and try, would strengthen their bond to a point where, many years after the two vanished in their Searches, Codex still thought often of them with a smile - albeit, with a tinge of sadness.

Codex has always been a curious soul. That, his natural intellect, and his ponderings on why Guardians functioned the way they did lead him into a career as a biologist. He was fascinated by the Coatl tongue, puzzled by a Spiral’s flexibility, intrigued by Fae body language, amazed by a Snapper’s jaw strength, in awe of the fearsome - and thankfully rare - Emperor.

During the high times of his career, when like-minded scholar were requesting his work, he'd hired a scribe to write copies. It was a long, grueling task: Codex’s handwriting near indecipherable and the scribe unfamiliar with the scientific jargon within. Over time the two became close. Eventually he and Ceecee became mates, having a short and troubled couple of decades together before clan alchemist's faulty brew ripped her from his life. She was gone; he watched the life drain from her body in a growing puddle of red, her crystal hide a web of hairline fractures and jagged edges.

Life after that became a blur for the scientist as he threw himself harder into his work, ignoring the grief and agony that was slowly drowning him until he either gave in or gave out.

It was only through the intervention of the dimension-traveler Aiyanna, that it wasn't the latter. She knew his type of pain, had struggled alone with the same for years until the edge had come so close she either had to turn back or risk slipping. She wouldn't let him be; talked to him; forced him to take breaks, eat, rest; got the others involved; and was a general nuisance.

He hated her then, couldn't quite let go of his grudge now, but was nonetheless thankful to her for the future she'd prevented.

Nowadays Codex would say he's not “great,” or “good,” or even “decent.” But he's “okay.” He's slowly moving on, growing used to the missing piece of his heart, and taking life as it comes. Maybe not at the rate Starbound needs - they've assigned him as interim medic and Shade, he's a biologist, not a healer or a doctor or even a nurse, he can't stand another death - but he'll do his best. Life's never gone easy on him, and he's only let it get the better of him once.
