The Toxic Guard

Where do we go now?

A shooting star...

Striker, peculiarly, is not suffering from an increase in his condition, more the opposite: the Arcane warp seems to be repressing the toxic metals bonded to him. He is enjoying the chance to be up and about, roving the clan's territory for threats and holdouts of the Arcane taint.

*

Striker is intrigued by news of the aether, and oddly on edge to learn this was all an accident. Is the clan truly still so vulnerable? Or is it that he senses something amiss elsewhere?

*

Striker has been staying close to home for Greenskeeper Gathering, despite his rather garish festival glamour, concerned that the toxic metal will recur now that the Arcane warp is gone.

12738.png
Striker is a mild-mannered mirror who serves as on the border guard and as a raider, as well as a hunter and digger when called upon. Taciturn, though not by mirror standards, and friendly, he is difficult to anger or upset. He approaches life with blunt honesty and the ear of a good listener. If necessary, he would die for his pack—the clan, especially their founders.

Overshadowing his loyalty and bluff friendliness, however, is a strange affliction. Under a tough, clear hide, liquid mercury swirls and shifts over a corroded metal layer. His face-mask is metallic and naked, flecked with bands of rust. Oily patterns swirl over his wings, and at times they shed a fine mist of contaminated water. This appears to be due to a warped version of Infiltrator-essence, though if the error is repairable, no one has bothered to fix it. Some of the more superstitious dragons, such as Explorer, believe that there is more than this—that Striker's mere presence corrodes metal and causes malfunctions, strengthens disease and encourages accidents.

Striker gets along well, if at a physical remove, with most of the clan, but is closest with Kudrin. He and Nightshade have an on-and-off rivalry. Despite her speculation, Explorer is sympathetic more than hostile, and has an on-and-off project to prove she is correct and harness Striker's misfortune for the clan.

Craft
Striker makes simple charms of wood, bone, and shell that are often sold as hatchling-toys, though care must be taken that he not contaminate them. For a Fire dragon, he has rather little interest or skill in crafting or metalwork, though he admires the creations of others.

Physical description
Average in size and build, and the largest of the clan's mirrors by over half a meter, Striker's affliction renders him heavy and distinctive-looking. His patterns of quicksilver-on-silver-and-rust shift with his movements. Close examination shows patterns of sinews picked out in corroded metal. A poor flyer, he is heavily reliant on thermals on the rare occasions he takes to the air, but is an efficient, enduring runner who can jog for hours, and a skilled diver. He smells powerfully of cold metal, mineral oil, and chemical-tainted water.

Combat
In combat, Striker relies as much on endurance as on strength or speed. His blows are heavy and comparatively slow. He partners almost exclusively with Kudrin, and tends to take the lead in any team.

Origin
Striker hails from an anonymous clan of the Blacksand Annex with whom Cindercone Clan has a business arrangement. Like several of his clan-fellows, he was sent forth as a tribute to Stormcatcher in payment for one of their transactions; but the call to come to Tempest Spire never came for him.

Since hatching, Striker was told he would become an Exalt to Stormcatcher, after a brief time of training in Derecho Canyon. But, though the urge to go to Tempest Spire came to every other tribute, it never came to him, and he eventually was forced to come to terms with the fact that Stormcatcher preferred him to work in the mortal realm.

During his first Season of Night, Striker attempted to map the Deep Tunnels. This ended disastrously, when he slipped into a fast-flowing underground river that nearly drowned him, activating the Infiltrator-essence within him and causing him long-term damage. This also alerted the clan to the presence of the rogue skydancer, Valarauko, hiding near them.

Kin
Striker is the son of his hatching-clan's progenitors, a tundra and a mirror. Little is known about either, but it appears both were originally from other Flights—his father from Shadow and his mother from Ice—before signing on under Flamecaller's banner. Beyond his parents, his ancestry is completely unknown, but from his incredibly unremarkable proportions it is likely that mirrors predominate even on his father's side.

Striker has had several children, all of whom have left the clan—though one, Moulder, remains in Cindercone Clan's close ally, Northslope. Two have gone to the gods, specifically Gladekeeper and Plaguebringer; those that have not all dwell in the Southern Icefield.

All of Striker's immediate descendants appear to bear some version of his misfortune. All have something bent or toxic about them, and most behave strangely. There is a strict policy that he not sit any nests with Hazard.

Companion
During one of his forays into the Arena, Striker won the rare respect of this particularly brutal beastclan... cousin? Variant? Lookalike? As yet, the beastfolk warrior is aloof, but he has pledged to follow along in Striker's course to learn from him.
