Little Marmaduke is the baby of the caravan, although his actual age approaches 40. His naiveté, impeccable politeness, and well-meaning demeanor ensures him caravan-wide adoration, and equally widespread condescension. It's easy not to take him seriously, with his querelous voice, frail frame and handmade silks. His recent fevers, heat faints, and shivering spells have not helped any. The man attempted to hide his strange new illness for several months before his beloved partner, Grimilkin, discovered it (it's rather hard to conceal the fact that you've been hiccuping up fire for two seasons); and sure enough, it's caused the older fellow a terrible amount of worry and fuss. Marmaduke is in turns flattered and anxious with all this attention. And all the while, his resident Nightmare heats his fingers to a boil and feeds on his fears.

Although a delicate and well-proportioned dancer, as well as an incredibly accomplished seamster, Marmaduke's only real ambition is to become Bhalinder's apprentice taleteller. He is her most rapt and attentive audience, and has taken to transcribing as many of her tales as he can on scroll-like tapestries, in an attempt to preserve them. The auditory traditions of the Jongleur (and trickster's caravans at large) ensure that the older taleteller won't approve; so Marmaduke keeps his treasures hidden, hoping for the day the ancient matron will call for him.
