In his birth clan, his white coat but black, "stained" hands were seen as a blight, a sign of bad luck at best . While none of them took direct action against him, the whispers became unbearable, and he left home young, never looking back. In his wanderings, he took up art as a hobby, and tried to maintain a positive attitude. Even being met with kindness here and there, he couldn't help but wonder if he was cursed. These thoughts consumed him, and he sought help with a clan of mages. Even they weren't sure at first, but a conclusion had been reached that his markings were simply part of his coat, that he had nothing to worry about. The mages were still grateful for the opportunity to do some research, though. When the clan collapsed in on itself, Smudge joined Eren in seeking out Hanna to tell her what had happened. By then, he'd integrated into the clan, as if he were one of their own. When Hanna's decision to reform surfaced, he nervously took up a sword, trying to serve the clan as thanks. He feels a certain kinship with black cats, for the stigma surrounding them. Even now, he hides his hands, as he is unsure how strangers will react to him. While he's not an especially skilled combatant, he is determined to get stronger. Lately, he's felt like the black markings are spreading. He thought his problem was resolved, but he has his doubts. Something feels wrong.
