Shale came to the Caravan as a young happy thing with enough life and energy to exhaust even a spiral. He spent many a day climbing and crawling all over the then terrestrial lair during the clan’s first move to the Reedcliff Ascent. Like any good Wind dragon Shale loved to get high and feel the wind in his wings. One day he climbed up a bit… too high. He climbed to the top of a tall cliff where down below he could see the Wasteland in the north and the Sea in the east. He was so taken that he wasn’t ready when a strong gust of wind came.

  He fell.

Through some miracle Shale didn’t just die on his fall. Perhaps it was the branches and shrubs that cushioned his fall, or maybe the Windsinger had taken pity on it. Regardless, he lived through the ordeal, but was unable to walk as he’d broken three of his four legs and part of his spine. So maybe the Windsinger wasn’t watching over him.

So Shale lay there at the base of the cliff, crying out for help. But no help came for a very long time. Hours passed and Shale lost much of his strength. It was in this twilight of death that things began to twist and jerk in the earth around him. Shale had fallen onto a dumping ground of princes by the local serthis tribe. Shale was dying and the feeling of his dying life and magic ignited the old corpses of the princes that had come undone. But unable to run away Shale was helpless to defend himself against the grasping claws and decaying maws.

At some point he lost consciousness and awoke again in the safe embrace of one of the nest guards; Komali with no memory of what had happened or if what had happened down there at the bottom of the cliff had been some terrible nightmare. It wasn’t until he was returned to the clan for a healer to inspect him was the true damage and horror revealed.

Shale had lost most of the use in his back legs, the bones completely shattering on impact. His front legs were in a bit better shape, but he’d never be able to walk normally again. Special braces were commissioned for all his limbs so he could continue to walk after healing but he would never be able to be as he had. He would hobble and limp his entire life. His body was also covered in scars from hitting rocks and other debris during his fall. Most monstrous though was what had befallen him at the bottom of that cliff though.

The princes had not been some terrible nightmare. They had been real. They were too weak and faded to use Shale as a new seed for their Emperorism but they instead grafted parts of themselves to his body. They were very obvious as a young imperial with an extra set of front legs behind the first and too many wings and too many toes in strange places. Shale even has extra eyes in his facial fur and smaller antlers amid his mane. The worst though is his mouth. When Shale opens his mouth there is his normal teeth, and then behind them is another full set of teeth. Shale had become a monster and those that knew wanted to put Shale out of his misery and not let an Emperor thing near their clan.

Nadalin said no. Shale was part of their clan and he was alive. So Shale was allowed to live despite his extra limbs and eyes and teeth. She commissioned elegant and sturdy braces for him so he could walk with some ease.

Shale was not the same though. After what had happened at the bottom of the cliff he was no longer a cheerful, excitable, rambunctious young imperial. He became withdrawn and depressed, knowing he was a freak. And he could no longer walk or run or jump or climb as he liked to and even when he grew large enough he’d never be able to fly. His wings were fine but his legs would not be able to handle the impact of landing. He withdrew into himself and became depressed, not interacting with many dragons and just sort of existing for a long while.

That was many years ago now. Shale has grown and is now the head librarian for Home Story and the entire Caravan. Its a perfect job for him really. He gets to spend most of his time sitting and off his damaged legs. He is no longer depressed but he is much more reserved than he was before the accident. He speaks in distorted whispers and he’s known to scare young dragons without intending to. While as a hatchling his Emperorism was easy to see as an adult they are negligible. The extra limbs Shale took on were already dead, and they did not grow with him as he aged. So they are small things, easy to hide and keep out of sight from normal dragons now that he is fully grown. He still cannot fly but he doesn’t let that get him down.

Since then he has found someone who loves him despite his disabilities and Shoal is a source of great love and light in his life. She always does her best to make him feel good about himself. She also has no problem reading him stories at any time, so Shale can visit all the places he’s wanted to go, without ever leaving the Windsinger’s Tale. When Shoal isn’t around his psywyrm Siggy can be seen bouncing through Home Story carrying books to bring back to Shale to read. Sigh also likes finding abandoned books in the library and bringing them back to Shale so he can put them back where they belong.
