Bugle
Strategist
XNyVdwX.png

Even though his opponent's eyes were hidden with a dark cloth, the Guardian felt the fiery eyes of the Imp burn into him as his claws hung thoughtfully near his bishop and knight. Sweat trickled down the side of his skull and down his neck, slowly and distractedly, making the moment seem to linger far longer than it actually passed.

He swallowed in an attempt to relieve the dryness in his throat. Glancing between the chess board and to his opponent, the Guardian wondered if Bugle ever lost his nerve. His mind raced.

I should've not gloated today, he cursed himself. Damn pride made him open his mouth at combat training, saying he was even skilled enough at chess to beat Bugle, their group's strategy instructor. He only did it to impress one of his clanmates (an intelligent Pearlcatcher with glistening white scales), but word traveled fast and eventually reached the ears of Bugle himself.

So, here he was, regretably trying to put some substance in his earlier words. It's not to say that the game was not close, with almost the same number of pieces taken from either side, but he recognized that Bugle was trying to pin his king to a corner.

Finally, he made his choice, moving a nearby pawn forward. The golden Imp nodded in acknowledgement. Lowered his gaze towards his pieces (how did he see?!?!), Bugle paused only a moment and decisively moved a rook to take his knight.

"Checkmate," the Imp responded cooly. The Guardian looked perplexed. He didn't even consider that move... Gritting his teeth, he lowered his head and shut his eyes in defeat.

"Probably best not to run one's mouth further than one's own talents," the Imp continued and he rose to stand. The Guardian visibly winced at Bugle's words. "Still, it was a fun game. It's nice to have a challenge once in awhile."

This caused the Guardian to look up in surprise. However, his instructor was already on his way out towards door. "Think of a better strategy for next time," and with that, Bugle's massive, golden frame just barely fit through the doorway and turned towards the training fields.

The lone Guardian looked backed at the chess board, thinking back towards his fatal mistake. Yes, he had some planning to do for next time. Perhaps he may have a chance to win against his instructor. Perhaps...

The Imp smiled to himself once he was outside the stone building. It's more effective to get his students to think from their mistakes in some more concrete exercise - better than verbally discussing in his classroom...far better than making a fatal mistake out in the actual field of battle overall.

There was always a method to his decisions, always a higher purpose in his plans. This time it was an illusion to protect his dignity as a top-notch chess player with the true intent to train up one of his students to be a far better strategist. Or was it? It could be both goals, right? Only Bugle knew in the end...

Bugle is absolutely breathtaking! I have a soft spot for black and gold dragons, and this dragon showcases this look beautifully. His color scheme pairs perfectly with his familiar and, as someone who enjoys chess, I found his lore to be quite interesting and unique.
