The Taleteller is probably the oldest caravan rank to exist, earlier even than the Ringmaster; and it is also one of the most important. If you can't tell a fine story to a stranger, in the traditional way of thinking, you are unworthy of associating with the ancient trickster spirits that patron the caravans. Bhalinder's exact age is hard to determine, but she's certainly older than Starshace, Thaumas or the Ringmaster – who are all ancient, their lives prolonged by their close connection with the Cabinets. The only Jongleur older than her are probably Surth and the patron spirit herself. It's long past the point where the grandmotherly Taleteller should find an apprentice and retire; but she stubbornly clings to the job, even as she begins repeating lines and forgetting details. Grimilkin has attempted to persuade her to reconsider many times, of course. But Bhalinder still gets her way, even if it is only through a healthy amount of pointed inaction and a bit of pretended deafness. The old woman is set like an old tree, rooted to her daily traditions and favorite spots to drink tea.

Still, her age and experience are entirely unmatched, and those are perhaps the two qualities most important to a Taleteller of stature. She remains one of the most widely renowned features of the Jongleur, a mainstay nearly since its foundation; she's got one thousand stories tucked into her head, say the children and the travelers. And when you hear her speak softly over the fire with paint on her face and honey in your tea, you can believe it. You believe it because Bhalinder believes it; and that is the trickster's real power.
