Biography
I am the rustling of leaves in the wind; the quiet babbling of a brook. I am the squawk of birds as they take flight in unified shock, and the buzzing of insects' wings as they flee the screaming flock. I am the Grove's Voice, and I speak for us all.
Hatched to a parent who quietly watches and listens, and a father who happily follows, I learned early in my life to pay attention to the world around me. Yet, I discovered that silence was simply not for me, and took joy in parroting what I heard. Not just the speech of dragons, but the cries of wildlife and the sounds of my home, echoed first in my head and then within my throat. I could imitate the creaking of two old tree trunks scraping against one another almost as exactly as I could mimic my parents' voices.
My clanmates found my compulsive repetition alternately amusing and irritating, and while they ultimately cared for me I sought a place in which I would better fit in.
I set out on what I had anticipated would be a long journey, but found its end as I reached the western edge of the Gladeveins. A green guardian appeared to be berating a ragamouse as if it could understand him, the small mammal seeming utterly insignificant between two of the dragon's great toes. Beside him, a mirror clutched a dirty brown hatchling nearly as big as herself, whom evidently did not want to be clutched. After a moment's silent contemplation, the guardian snapped up the ragamouse and practically swallowed it whole, to which the massive hatchling protested vehemently. The ragamouse's own cries of protest, however, where what rang clearest to me.
I let the cries echo in my ears for a moment, before repeating them with care. All three dragons looked about in confusion. Resting as I was within the boughs of a small tree, I was well-camouflaged and thus difficult to spot from a distance. The guardian hatchling grew silent, and so I repeated myself.
Climbing down to ground level and scurrying about in underbrush, I became a ragamouse, loudly announcing my presence with the friendly, curious squeaks I was more accustomed to hearing. An immediate search commenced for my whereabouts, led by the delighted hatchling.
I was not, however, as well-camouflaged on the ground, and played my part too convincingly. All too soon, a massive paw slammed down on my lower body. I was lifted into the air by my tail, creating an unpleasant pulling sensation on my spine. I flapped frantically, concerned that it might break off if I tried to free myself; but equally concerned that it might break anyway if I didn't lift my own weight. I felt my fingers catch purchase on something, and held on for dear life.
With both of my hands wrapped around one of the guardian's toes, he brought me up to eye level. I found myself enduring unwanted scrutiny as I struggled to get free. I apologised as loudly as I could, decrying a deep regret for what was obviously a foolish trick. But, I think, it was the mirror's words that saved me more than my own. I was freed so abruptly, I barely had time to open my wings and slow my fall.
