Once an elderly tundra, Erebus left his home in the Sea of a Thousand Currents looking for one last adventure, to see the world before he entered his twilight years. Luck or divine favour guided his path however and his humble self caught the eye of a great Nature clan. Though his red fur was coarse from seawater and his once bright wings dulled by time the clan spirit saw something special in him.

Should he make a home with them, he was told, he could have a new family, a new purpose in life. All he had to do was stay and accept the spirit's Blessing, which he did.

After that he noticed changes, slow in coming but inexorable as the tide. The aches and pains of old age faded, his body grew supple and sleek under long shaggy fur and his wings sprouted brilliant feathers streaked with gold. Even his face seemed to change but alas he could not properly see it all, for his fur, still coarse and unkempt obscured his view.

Finally, after long nights of restless sleep did he begin to shed, clumps of dull and brittle hair falling by the clawful... To reveal velveteen crimson shot with golden patterns, more vivid and vibrant than he'd ever seen.

It was only then that he truly realised the precious gift he'd been given, a new life birthed from the ashes of the past.
