Searing was sent by her old clan to find Killing, she doesn’t know why, or for what purpose. The Caravan originally thought Searing was here to kill Killing like so many other dragons and showed her right to Butcher’s airship. But they were very wrong. Searing wasn’t sent by her clan to kill Killing. Killing was her Charge. Somehow the dragons of her old clan, perhaps told by the Plaguebringer (or even the Lightweaver) herself Searing was sent directly to her Charge. Searing is Killing’s protector. Killing doesn’t like being disturbed. She doesn’t like being yelled at or scolded or made to feel upset. Searing is there to make sure that except for the dragons out to get Killing none of them make the imperial upset. Though Searing calls herself Killing’s protector it is more that she is the Caravan’s protector, and she is protecting all of them from Killing. This happens fairly often as Killing is the Caravan’s brewmaster and while the Caravan is wary of her her ability can not be ignored. If you need a potion, you go to Killing, and Searing is there to make sure Killing doesn’t turn you into her next favorite toy. Officially Searing is a member of the Caravan’s Guard and owes her allegiance to Kaley, Captain of the Guard. Kaley specifically put her on the Slaughter Three to protect both the Caravan from Killing and Killing from everyone else. Searing takes her duty very, very, seriously. Kaley has also given her the task that should Killing ever get out of hand that she’s to put Killing down. Kaley knows this is an impossible task for the Guardian but Searing swore she would try. If nothing else Kaley knows that knowing Killing would be killed should she get out of hand would cause Searing to protect her at all costs including locking her up to keep anyone from knowing Killing had gone on a rampage. |
