They didn’t quite understand what was going on. Just after hatching and seeing the world for the first time, their mother grunted in discontent. “Ugly hatchlings,” she had hissed, promptly standing and leaving the nest. The twins chirped earnestly, hungry for their first meal. But she did not come back.

The little boy is shy, not yet ready to explore the world. It’s cold and eerie here, and the only thing to counter the bite of winter a scrap of linen. On clear nights, through the scraggly branches and broken wood he can see the stars. They aren’t ugly, at least.

Shiny rocks lying around the den catch his eye. He'd quite like a collection of them.
