Vampire hunter families work better when they're dhampirs to begin with, at least - that's the way the logic goes. Not first generation, of course - but later, later, it takes time for there to be more mortal than vampire in the bloodline. Time for there to be enough to make sure they're not quite mortal - faster, stronger, enough to keep up with what they hunt but not enough that they have to deal with the Thirst.

What a pity, that Zenri's was massacred when he was a youngling.
What a pity, that not even his twin survived that fateful night.

But perhaps most of all - what a pity it is, that trauma can spur a more full transformation.
And how traumatic, that fateful night was.

Ah, but Zenri fights it.
He has.
For sixteen years and counting.

It's a stunning display of willpower that means some older vampires are jealous, and other hunters can't make up their minds if he's too dangerous to allow to remain or not.

Being fair, not even Zenri is sure of where he falls.

It's harder some days than others, he suggests you keep your distance. Please, actually, keep your distance. Don't tempt him. Don't. Please.

It was so much easier to deny the thirst when he was all alone. Please, he'd rather be lonely for the rest of his life than become anything at all like that woman. But this clan - they've given him a place to stay, and they give him the distance he demands.

He's thankful.
So he'll help where he can in return.
It's the least he can do, even if it makes his life harder behind closed doors.
