━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

It lined up with every description he’d heard. Red and orange tents everywhere, large enough for Imperials, the smallest for only Fae dragons. Now to find her. He held up the sketch, a pretty good one. He should be able to pick out this Spiral anywhere, especially if she was sentimental, wearing the corsage.

No one would look for him here. As long as he didn’t mess this up━like you’ve messed everything up lately, Marius?━he could keep breathing.

Marius landed a few feet outside the tent on the furthest outskirt of the camp and ducked into a stand of bamboo, heartbeat accelerating at the sight of all the weapons and armor. This━he didn’t expect this. She was the daughter of a priest, a dancer. How was she mixed in with all this?

“Hey. Hey, can I help you with something?”

Marius started at the voice, but turned to see a menacing-looking Guardian with tattered wings. He held up the sketch and said, “I’m looking for Celtine. She’s━”

The Guardian didn’t let him finish, flicked his tail to point. “Small tent, decorated with the skulls of her enemies and fallen Harpy feathers. You can’t miss it.”

Every instinct in Marius's body told him to run, but he couldn’t. He crawled through the camp, looking for a tent large enough for a Spiral with feathers and skulls. The Guardian was right. It was hard to miss. Marius slithered to the door and poked at it with his tail.

“Hello?” he called inside.

Almost immediately, the flap pulled back. “Yes?”

Gale’s beautiful daughter. No. His beautiful daughter. Marius put on a smile and shrank back ever so slightly. “Hey, there, Celtine. It’s me, your dad. Gale.”

Gale is a dancer and priest at a temple to the Wind singer. He’s never visited the Tempest Chase. He has a daughter by a former flame named Wisteria. This dragon is not Gale, but he puts on a pretty good show. Marius is a condragon, a liar and smoothtalker. He’s smart enough to think on his wings, but not smart enough to leave well enough alone.

Marius never talks about his past, and never talks about himself. Instead, his interests seem to lie in coaxing out everyone else’s deepest and darkest secrets for use in his own ends. His own ends are usually treasure, though he wouldn’t know what to do with it if he managed to get more than he needed to make it to the next month alive. If anyone knew any better (which, they don’t) they might rightly assume Marius hates his life and who he is. There’s little other reason to spend every waking moment pretending to be somebody else.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Marius is a good enough fighter to defend himself, as he gets himself into a myriad of questionable situations. A good rule of thumb, though, is that if lying his way out of a problem doesn’t work, running away is a perfectly sensible option. Plans that involve chasing, attacking, or otherwise exerting brute physical force are never good plans. All the same, Marius was quick to find out that the Tempest Chase’s coffers were quite full of treasure and interesting artifacts, so he figured that it wouldn’t be so terrible a place to stay. While trying to figure out how to skim funds and keep his head securely on his neck at the same time, Marius has grown uncommonly close with his “daughter,” Celtine. He’d sell his own mother (if he knew where she was) if the situation demanded it, but, then, he doesn't exactly consider his mother family, either.

Marius is a Wind dragon, and the worst kind. He goes wherever the Wind takes him, as long as it glitters like gold. His well-traveled wings let him fit into almost any situation, and his Spiral body and mentality contort, twist, and tangle into almost any shape he needs. These days, it’s Gale, the retired dancer and priest who just wants to spend a little extra time with his daughter. Maybe Marius will learn a little something along the way. If not, he’ll be on his way with a handful of treasure and his eyes on the next prize.

The only creature in proximity who knows who and what Marius really is, is Eddy, the Kitsune, named for the little spirals of Wind magic he plays with when he’s stressed. Unsurprisingly, Eddy is not an ambassador at all, but a con artist like Marius. He’s not as good at it as Marius is, but perhaps all his time around Marius taught him how to spot a liar and a cheat better than anybody. Unlike Marius, Eddy would give up his cover to save Marius, his only friend in the world and protector when things go horribly wrong. Of course, since Marius has been on the run, he has no idea where Eddy is or whether he’s safe. Part of Marius knows he has to find him and get him out of the trouble he started.

Even though Celtine is not really his daughter, he’s doing his best to make her believe she is. She treats him with as much respect as a spy would treat her father priest, but still shows the requisite familial love. This has made Marius increasingly uncomfortable as they built a relationship built entirely on lies. Even though Marius senses that Celtine (and, perhaps, the Chase) don’t have as many liquid assets as he would like, he bristles at the idea of leaving all the same. There’s something here, and something in Celtine, he’s never had before.

The real Gale hopefully doesn’t remember Marius at all. As part of his strategy to get away from the dragons hunting him as quickly as possible, Marius ducked into the nearest temple for a few days to lie low posing as a proselyte. He met Gale, a Spiral like him, a priest of the Windsinger and a dancer. Gale was happy to talk about his family, particularly a daughter (whose near birthday brought her to mind apparently) he hadn’t seen for decades. Marius hopes that he’ll never see Gale again, as his latest con (this time to keep himself alive) is to trick Gale’s daughter into taking him in for a few days and possibly take her for half the wealth she has. It doesn’t pay to be too greedy.

» For as smart as Marius is, he can’t fake the real skill or talent in dancing that Gale has. He’s managed to wiggle out of any situations to show this blatantly.

aesthetic: As a dancer, Gale likes flowing silks, jewelry, and anything that shows off his immaculate moves. Marius has no idea what he likes.
