Biography

48677852.png     Tuff the Merchant
     That’s our motto!

Theme: Pollen
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Okay, well, do you have a--and he’s gone…” Zimri chuckled nervously and looked at his visitor. “Spirals, am I right?”

His guest, a stoic Ridgeback, just blinked.

Tuff zoomed off from sight, behind the bamboo shelves he’d built himself. He shouted━distantly━about such-and-such not being the thing he was looking for and, Oh! He hadn’t seen that in ages. “You Want It? We Have It!” he added. “That’s our motto!”

Tuff returned less than two minutes later carrying an arm-full of items of rough relation to the fur his Ridgeback customer was seeking. He had skeins of wool spun from the mane of a Cumulus Seal, umbral yarn, and traditional Foo-silk blankets weaved by a nearby colony, along with other dozens of things he had hanging off him as he spiraled mid-air.

“All sorts of colors and textures,” Tuff announced, suddenly straightening. Everything piled on him fell in a heap before the Ridgeback. Tuff picked out a few samples to show him, though the Ridgeback didn’t look amused.

Zimri held his breath and hoped his family’s reputation wouldn’t suffer for suggesting Tuff’s shop next to Zimri’s gate. Who was he kidding? This shop wasn’t little. It took up a sizeable portion of the Estate of Escape fronting the road that led to the sea. Tuff must have spent millions hollowing out a storage cellar… Zimri went down there once and couldn’t see most of the walls, they were so far away.

“Quite a selection you have,” the Ridgeback said suddenly, fingering a bluelight chipskink pelt. He looked up and around as he nodded. “I don’t believe I should be able to forget this place, but I will commit it to memory.”

“Most Monster Materials You Ever Saw! That’s our motto!” Tuff piped, picking up the rest of his furs and animal skins.

Not all children hatched to the way of hunting monsters choose that life for themselves when they’re grown. Tuff is a perfect example. Contrary to the ways of most Wind dragons, Tuff was a homebody. He stayed on the Steppes where he was raised and watched his parents and the rest of the Chase bring home strange and exotic items that he could play with when they left again. He got to help sell these items on occasion, and that was when he learned what he loved.

Tuff became an enthusiastic salesdragon, sharing his love for these items with those interested… and with those not interested. He is one of the first dragons that the Chase will sell their collected pelts, horns, and other treasures to. Tuff has somewhere for everything, and enough interested clients to his centrally-located shop that he can move these items with fair regularity.

One of the good things about staying close to home is the free time to develop hobbies and make a network of friendships across the Steppes and even beyond. Even though it’s not technically a part of his job (and most dragons think he’s at least a little annoying), Tuff has many contacts that he takes absolutely no advantage of, for the most part. He nevertheless manages to bring up in every conversation how such-and-such a dragon is “a very dear friend” of his. The oddest part is it’s almost always true.

More than any other dragon in the Chase, Tuff has well-developed hobbies, particularly cooking, collecting, and researching. His various insect-based soups are popular with the local Faes and Skydancers, and his antiques, while not worth much more beyond sentiment, have detailed histories he’s compiled.

As a Wind dragon and a Spiral, one would expect Tuff to travel more. He is perfectly content with his little adventures at home. He has plenty of friends to fill up his off hours, including Zimri and his sister, Mab (when she’s in town), the caretakers of the Estate of Escape, and several dragons from surrounding clans that he visits whenever he gets a little stir-crazy. After all, even though he’s not an adventurer, he’s still a Spiral.

Growing up with Guardian siblings has a strange effect on a Spiral. After all, Tuff could hardly fly in a straight line, was never very focused. Some of his most disappointing memories are of losing races to his brothers and sisters even though he was sure he was faster than they were. As such, he worked at it… a lot. As a gift, his father got him a sphinx named Swift as a pet. Tuff and the cat spend a lot of time together, zooming around over the steppes, and they both enjoy entering in races. Expending so much energy, though, makes them very tired. They can just as easily be found curled up together napping.

Cliff Lion When Tuff showed an interest in setting up his own shop somewhere, Switch was the first to jump on that idea. She had grand plans for improving the Estate her parents had watched for years, adding amenities and attractions for guests to stop and spend time and treasure. Tuff’s idea of a shop filled to the brim with monster materials seemed to fit in nicely, since one of the Estate’s biggest attractions was as the home of the nomadic monster hunters. Switch gave Tuff some space, and he’s certainly made the best of it. He still trying to figure out how to run a business, though.
I’m not sure how (because she doesn’t have a character yet), but he knows Lilika.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Since he’s not fond of either of his parents’ surnames, he chose the surname Fastflight for himself.
»
» Not surprisingly, Tuff is perhaps the fastest dragon in the clan. He frequently places in races in Wind Territory far ahead of other Spirals simply because he’s learned to fly in straight lines.
