Moonfeather

Traumatised Ball of Anxiety, Part-Time Chef

ol4F6Vi.png Eternally traumatised, nobody is sure why Moonfeather's in the clan. He's useless to the point that you can't even use him as a paperweight, because he'd just start sobbing and ruin your paperwork. Some dragons leave him be purely out of pity, other dragons keep him around as a convenient test subject friend. Whatever the case, it's not like letting him stay is hurting anyone, so nobody's felt inclined to boot him yet.

Moonfeather spends most of his time hiding in the shadows, or curled up under a blanket, or hidden in the fur and feathers of his unfortunate clanmates. Usually, he can found staring blankly around the lair and jumping at the slightest sounds. Occasionally, he can be found tunneling aimlessly around the lair - which doesn't tend to end well, thanks to the landmines Isfet's planted all over the place. Nephthys would really appreciate it if someone would just Spiral-proof the walls of the clan lair. She's so tired of having to patch Moonfeather up, she'd behead him if it didn't take so much effort.

Of course, it's not like Moonfeather's a freeloader. Freeloaders tend not to have a long life expectancy in this clan, especially with dragons like Ma'at and... well, Ma'at, around. When he's slightly less terrified, Moonfeather's help has been recruited in the kitchens by Kavleyn. Surprisingly, he's pretty good at making dishes. Any meal Moonfeather whips out is a delicacy seasoned by regret. It's a rather likable flavour, judging by how many dragons in this clan feast on the tears of their enemies.

Aside from helping Kavleyn, Moonfeather also helps Demeter with her work. As the leader of everything that goes on within the clan, Demeter has tasked Moonfeather with the mundane task of keeping the lair clean. Not that he has to do much in terms of cleaning. Muffin blows up the lair at least once every couple of weeks, so even if he accidentally misses a spot, it's only a matter of time before the lair gets renovated again.

Krajta once hired Moonfeather to dig an underground base. The resulting labyrinth was beautiful, with arches, pillars, and shelves for displaying spoils of war. Of course, that lasted only as long as it took to discover he'd also dug an empty chamber below the headquarters, and now just putting something on the shelf might bright the whole thing down.

Li4DrSi.png The only dragon who can effectively communicate with Moonfeather is his mate, Seraphina. One of the few dragons who were actually present when he first arrived at the clan as a gibbering wreck, Seraphina was tasked with taking care of him. It was during this time that she discovered his incredible ability to play the roles of different characters. Thus, she set to work making him the best actor that would ever lay claim to the Runic Mountain Range! (And the only one, on that matter.)

During their training together, Seraphina found that Moonfeather can be a curious, almost cheerful pile of noodles who eagerly throws himself headlong into any role she gives him. He's capable of flawlessly acting out any scene Seraphina asks of him - a most glorious skill! This side of him instantly vanishes the moment there's an audience, though, so it's going to be some time before Seraphina can actually start her theatre troupe again. Nevertheless, Moonfeather always calms down around Seraphina, so she can usually be depended on to get him under control.

Another dragon that can be depended to calm Moonfeather down is Astraea, who's so forgetful there's nothing he could possibly take offense at. Interactions between the two normally involve blank stares and absentminded nodding. A few dragons have noted that the two are oddly similar, except for the fact Moonfeather's far better at remembering things than Astraea. That time Isfet tripped him in the hallway? He remembers. That night Nephthys threw him out of the lair? He remembers. That time Myrtle almost succeeded in killing him? Well, he wishes he could forget, but he can't, so now that particular nightmare is forever branded into his mind.

Since it's unknown how Moonfeather wounded up in the Runic Mountain Range, many dragons are interested in figuring out his past, and how that ended up with him as a member of the Aequitas Clan. Of course, Moonfeather gets too nervous to speak when faced with more than one dragon, so any research done has yet to be inconclusive. And the last time Harmony asked about his combative experience, he burst into tears, so it's likely that they need to fix his trauma before digging up his past. Knowing the dragons in this clan, that's not happening, but stranger things have happened.

Due to his tendency to get himself into fatal situations, Demeter ordered for Moonfeather to be accompanied at all times. This order failed, as Moonfeather can't stand anyone other than Seraphina for prolonged length of time, so Demeter reluctantly asked Viper for help. This resulted in a ball python that now follows Moonfeather around. His name is Noddle, who likes riding around on Moonfeather's floating cards and can usually be trusted to serve as a soft ball of noodle-ly love for the poor Spiral. Occasionally Noddle can be found with Kavelyn's snake Asdfghjkl in the kitchens, practicing archery as their pet dragons dabble in cooking. However, it's a while before Noddle will be able to match Asdfghjkl's archery skills (if ever.) The last time he tried his tail at a crossbow, the kitchen almost blew up.

Moonfeather is rumoured to be from a far-off clan and a former guard, the only survivor of a horrific slaughter. But he can't hold a toothpick without stabbing himself in the face, much less wield a sword or spell, so the story's mostly passed around as a joke. I mean, what kind of former guard would be terrified of fireflies?

When a Spiral ceases to fly, it dies.

Whether it be because of an injured wing, illness, hunger, or weariness. When a Spiral falls from the sky, it dies.

The only question is, how long it will suffer before it does.

They say that when you fall, the scenery rushes past you like a blur. It was true, this assumption, but only if there was a short distance to fall. From a place up so high, he had plenty of time to think, to watch the horizons glide toward him, before the short, sharp impact consumed him in blinding white pain.

The wind, a sigh and a shriek at the same time rushed past his ears, an echo of the past.

Turncoat, turncoat, it sang in his clanmates’ voices. You killed us, you killed us, the hatchlings chirped.

Raindrops shattered upon his scales, veiling him in a silvery shroud, as clouds had cloaked the once-bright sky.

Darkness. He would gladly welcome it. Embrace it. He had done things far too terrible to deserve the shine of the light.

Though he would give anything to feel the warmth of the sun on his wings again.

He curled up, trying to make himself as small a target for the memories as he could. But it was no use, and he was swept into a whirlpool of images. They blurred by, flashing in synchronization with the pain.

“Turncoat, turncoat,” he mumbled to himself in delirium. They were the first words he had spoken since his sister died, since the dragon’s claw had torn through her body, since an animal scream had been ripped from his throat, red-raw-crumbling.

A turncoat deserves to die. That was what his instructors in his clan had taught him. He had tried, but he had failed. He had failed his clanmates, failed their memory. He had failed his sister, and he could not bear that.

He lifted his broken wings, ready to try again. Instead, he found himself inching towards another direction. Towards escape. The voices of all that had died by him screamed at him, implored him to join them. “I can’t,” he cried. “I failed you. I’m sorry.”

He wasn’t strong enough, that was the problem. He wasn’t strong enough to resist the enemy’s mind control, he wasn’t strong enough to join his clan in the void. Fly away. That was all he knew how to do. And now he couldn't do even that. He would never fly again.

It is true that when a Spiral ceases to fly, it dies.

The question that should be asked, however, is if it is on the inside or the outside.
