Biography
Kova Occupation: Tinkerer, Hunter, Farmer - Onions, Radishes and Turnips Mate: Miesh Hardworking | Focused | Reliable | Tactless | Quiet |
|
Not much is known about Kova's life before he was brought to the Wild Oats settlement by Shavuot. Common knowledge is that he was born to the Matriarch of an established clan in the Shifting Expanse. It was curious then, and even now, as to why a dragon from such a technologically advanced society would agree to living in a humble farming community. But regardless, Kova showed promise in the craft of planting. There's something about the feeling of fertile earth in my palm, he would often say. It's productive in a way that electricity and metal never can be. In his cultivation lessons with Oats, Kova found that he had an aptitude for growing root-based vegetables, likening the process to laying wire. He grows an assortment of onions, radishes and turnips. His crop of potato onions are usually traded to Hush for medicinal uses, although Kova does keep a few specimens from the crop for his endeavor to brew a hearty onion potato soup. He has yet to perfect the recipe. Kova is quiet, shy, and not the most articulate dragon. But that isn't to say he is dull witted. His farming technique is an odd combination of natural and mechanical; resulting in haphazard inventions used to improve his crops. This has often landed the Mirror the unofficial title of Clan Tinkerer, but his inventions mostly consist of homemade parchment balloons that are part of an irrigation network that waters his crops from above. When pressed on his knack for crafting such contraptions he has, in the past, revealed that his father is a researcher for his own clan and thus must have passed his talents on to him. For some time, it was widely known that Kova is the object of Miesh's affection and the Mirror was not so privy to such information. This resulted in some of the townsfolk trying to discretely play matchmaker to get the pair alone together. It was thought that Kova simply did not feel the same for Miesh, and those close to her told her as such. But one day, he surprised everyone and formally asked Miesh to accompany him to the annual Festival of Kites, a harvest celebration held within the settlement every autumn. More shocked than any other dragon in town was Miesh, who had been convinced until that point that her affections were completely one sided and not to mention a total secret. The pair eventually held a public mateship ceremony and some time later, Miesh hatched her first clutch. The entire town celebrated the birth of the children, as they were the first born since the town's establishment. Shortly after his and Miesh's first clutch hatched, Kova was forced to leave the clanhome along with the majority of the other citizens in order to seek work in larger clans for the winter. Crop yield was low that year so it was a necessity for the farmers to seek employment elsewhere in order to keep the town alive through the winter. Kova's children spent their first developmental months without their father, which pained the Mirror greatly as he had hoped to dote upon his children in their infancy. But thanks to his labor along with the other townsfolk, his children remained well fed throughout the winter. Sadly, time and fate saw fit to part Kova's first hatched from the village. Since the loss of his son and later, his daughter, Kova has taken on a more solemn demeanor. Kova tends to busy himself in his fields, spending much of his time tending his crop or with his Shalebuck who is detrimental to Kova's profession. The beast, possessing great strength, aids Kova in both planting and harvesting. He still adores his mate, but the two are still trying to cope with, what they deem, a failed first clutch. During the time of what the Wild Oats townsfolk like to call the Great Blight, Kova's crop yield was abysmal, like the other farmers. The onions were the most plentiful and thus were used to flavor stews and provide some semblance of nutrients. Were it not for Kova's onions, the settlers may well have starved. Many of the townsfolk harbor a bittersweet fondness for onions these days because of that, though there is a novelty dish served at the Kitesong Inn called Bittersweet Stew, an onion broth flavored with parsnips and cress, that commemorates Kova and his onions. During the winter months, Kova works as both a cook and server at the Inn to earn extra coin while he can't sell his vegetables. Quote:
Kova totally talks with his plants. He swears they grow bigger and faster when he tells them small stories and anecdotes. It's a small habit he has grown fond of. Of course, he doesn't really want the clan to know about this since he is shy, so most of the talking is done is hushed whispers.
