“I get strangely obsessed about the cleanliness of our clan's lair.”
Esmeralda’s tale reads like a storybook - hatched to a harsh mother, she was told from a young age that she was hideous and that the only way she would bring honor to the family was to serve the Arcanist through exaltation. Esmeralda had heard tales of strange happenings in the Observatory - dragons that were half beast or half machine, pouncing shadows that came to life at night, fragments of Shade that rattled around in cages and screamed for dragonblood. She couldn’t imagine a worse life than that, and so she begged the leaders of this clan to offer her refuge from her deranged parent. While exaltation is an honor for many, Esmeralda had not undergone the proper training to serve in the entourage of a deity, and would have died before she ever reached the Arcanist’s refuge. So she cleans as a form of gratitude, and serves the fighters and adventurers of the clan when they return from their travels windblown and exhausted. She admired their courage- especially that of a young explorer named Dilan. He was like a fabled prince - dashing and brave and charming and handsome and a thousand other things beside. But still her mother’s voice rang in her head - she would never deserve a dragon like that. She fortunately proved herself wrong when she spilled juice on Dilan’s vest while serving the explorers, striking up a conversation as she attempted to clean him off. It turned out they had a lot in common, and the young dragon was just as drawn to her as she was to him. They became friends and then lovers, and now venture into the lands outside of the lair together.
