Biography
Shulmanu, the great black Imperial dragon, stood silently before the alter to the Lightweaver. His presence caught the attention of Rohe, Subordinate Priestess and tender of the alter--not just because he shared her color scheme, but also because he had been standing there, head bowed, for over a day. Rohe approached him cautiously, bearing a basket of fresh fish.. "Sir," she said quietly, "the Lightweaver grants prayers, of course, but she grants them more readily if spoken aloud."
Shulmanu startled, then sheepishly bowed his head. "I'm sorry; I'll be on my way."
"That's not what I meant." Rohe said, setting down the basket of meat. "As a priestess, it's my job to convey desires from worshipers of other flights back to our Glowmama. Why are you here?"
Shulmanu stared down at her. He had told almost nobody of his origins, but he had come to the edge of the Lightweaver's domain seeking absolution for his very existence. As first creator of the Imperials, he reasoned, only she would be able to forgive him for his own existence--born not from light, but from a fragment of the Shade. But the priestess looked so trusting, and so inviting, that Shulmanu couldn't help but begin to tell his tale.
When he had finished, Rohe got up and left without a word. Defeated. Shulmanu turned and began walking back towards the edge of the Shifting Expanse--too tired to fly. His surprise was immense when, hours later, Rohe came sprinting up to him, panting hard. "Your prayers have been answered!" she gasped happily, "I'm coming with you."
"That's not... what I wanted," Shulmanu stuttered.
"What you wanted was forgiveness for your own existence. But the Lightweaver can't grant that because it's not something that *needs* forgiving. I talked to the High Priestess and she told me that what you need is someone to remind you of that. So here I am: I will be your counselor until you get this idea through that helmet of yours."
"How long will you stay?" Shulmanu asked, tentatively allowing himself to feel hopeful.
"As long as it takes."
Rohe was welcomed into the Windhovers with open arms. In addition to being a counselor (and, later, mate) to Shulmanu, Rohe has taken a shine to the familiar "uplifting" project so dear to the Windhovers. She gets along well with Gwen, and happily spends her days tinkering with tiny batteries and biomechanical implants. She is currently developing a backpack solar panel to power intelligence-enhancing neural implants--not much use in the storm-shrouded Shifting Expanse, but potentially revolutionary in other Flights' realms.
