Discovered wandering the Shattered Plains by Lucia, who brought him home to nurse him back to health, Yalin is hopelessly devoted to her, and she is the only one who knows the truth of his origins – and the full story of how he came to her lair.

Yalin was raised by a mysterious 'School' that trained assassins and regularly sent its students to capture and torture baby imperials in the quest to create the ultimate Emperor dragon. Continually in trouble for his sharp tongue and mischievous wit, Yalin nevertheless believes implicitly in the power of the School to do anything, and is convinced that he, as one of their dragons, is not a true dragon with the right to have wants and desires of his own.

Now a member of Clan Warde, Yalin is a mysterious, shadowy figure. He prefers to work in the hidden spaces, carrying out the dirty work of the clan and making sure that if anyone does find the way to their little corner of the world they never find their way back. Sometimes, indeed, other members of the lair think he has gone too far, but Yalin has eyes only for Lucia and only her displeasure can move him.

But he has a soft spot for children, although he tries to hide it, and will allow himself to be climbed over or hunted or sat upon for hours without complaint. And he is slowly growing closer to the other members of the clan also. He does not trust them to keep themselves safe, but he is beginning to trust that Lucia will never order him to harm them, and that perhaps - just perhaps - he can work to keep them safe also.
Nevertheless, his closest friend, after his adored Lucy, of course, is the dragon that Yalin thinks most capable of looking after himself. Laito's origins are as shrouded in mystery as Yalin's own. All that remains to hint at his past is a fragment of a record, a scrap that reveals Laito's parentage to be as carefully-planned as Yalin's own was not.

The two dragons often meet on 'long patrols' that take them far past the clan's borders. Together, they explore the Scarred Wasteland that lies between the two clans, and take care that no threats are growing in the shadows of the Tangled Wood. Although each dragon insists that he does not need the other's help, they often seek each other out for company on long or dangerous missions.

Often they will crack jokes together or play pranks, but sometimes they talk quietly and seriously. Other times they simply sit together in silence, watching each other's backs and feeling, or perhaps merely trying to feel, safe.
