Jouska
n. a hypothetical conversation that you compulsively play out in your head—a crisp analysis, a cathartic dialogue, a devastating comeback—which serves as a kind of psychological batting cage where you can connect more deeply with people than in the small ball of everyday life, which is a frustratingly cautious game of change-up pitches, sacrifice bunts, and intentional walks.

On this side of the Gardens, it is quiet.

It's quite the contrast to some of the other areas in the Gardens; there, it is silent. There is more life here where the rivers bring heat and nutrients from deep within the earth.

Jouska can feel every breeze and movement, the roots and leaves sprawl across and into the ground. The ivy curled into the jagged walls, the footsteps of the few animals, all of it comes back to them. They do not question it.

They was borne from the darkness and life of the Gardens, and they have never left. After so many years, seeing through the eyes of the wild boars, the routine of the animals and plant life is a comforting constant. And despite this, despite being pressed to the heartbeat of the forest, being the heartbeat of the forest, Jouska did not foresee this.

Moledro.

She is the brightest thing Jouska has ever seen. Moledro, in her grace, that sharp beauty, a marvel. So foreign, so vibrant in the shadows of the warped trees and dark shadows. For the first time, dappled light adorns the ground and the cast forms of the underbrush dance as Moldedro moves.

Jouska can see the uncertainty in Moledro's step, the shifting at a shadow's movement. Jouska remembers Semaphorism's words, that a world without light was one that Moledro feared more than anything else. Illumination was truth, and to face the darkness was to face the vastness that was living without sincerity.

"There is no sun here."

Jouska doesn't say the warning aloud, they speak a different language, the two of them. Wind against branches, the movement of leaves.

Moldero pauses, for the first time, not surveying her surroundings. A strange, calm look pressed the look of fear away as she begins to speak.

"Have you ever seen it? Do you know what that's like?"

Jouska remembers what Semaphorism's words, because Jouska had asked him. Warm, he'd told her. Bright, maybe too bright. After being down here . . . well. He'd hesitated then, searching in vainly for a comparison to something Jouska would understand, in her world of darkness. It's a lovely thing, on it's own. But the true beauty lies in how it makes everything else appear. It paints the world, and everything is different.

Moldero is waiting for an answer, those burning points of light fixed on Jouska.

So Jouska considers. They consider the what little they know of luminescence from the few gleaming plants that lie in the darkness. They consider Semaphorism's explanation. They consider Moldero.

Her painfully cutting question and magnificent confidence in the face of her own darkness. The way Jouska's world was already shifting, falling out of place. Jouska had never been curious before. But this, this slash of honest wonder, was already opening so many questions.

The forest around them was no longer to be passively observed.

Darkness was no longer enough.

And looking at Moldero and her blinding questions, how Jouska wanted a chance to find this light she spoke of, Jouska decided.

"Yes, I have."

Jouska follows light. Moldero seeks truth.

Everything is brighter now.
