n. a feeling of resonant connection with an author or artist you’ll never meet, who may have lived centuries ago and thousands of miles away but can still get inside your head and leave behind morsels of their experience, like the little piles of stones left by hikers that mark a hidden path through unfamiliar territory.

Moledro is a sharp, hungry creature. Her skin is an ever-changing mosaic of wood and bark. When her claws move too quickly, there are audible snaps.

Of the clan, Moldero alone is not bound to the earth. Even Exulansis, gifted with flight, cannot bare to leave the desolate landscape for long.

But they watch her leave so often, and they wonder why she returns.

It is theorized by some that her difference is not a result of a universe full of entropy and chaos, but that the wood she is made of came from not any source, but an altar, stolen from the Light territory.

It would explain the mostly dried blood.

Where her eyes should be are empty points of light, and she is constantly roving, searching, burning for the truth. She rarely spends more than a day in the Sanctuary, fleeing from the sunless depths on the first dawn after her arrival.

It is uncertain where she departs to in those long weeks and seasons, but her return is highly anticipated. With a thorned claw, she delicately unfolds scrolls of spells, murder accounts, rituals, bedtime stories, and other unsettling things of the sort.

All these items are from a single life. Long dead poets, a mathematician killed for their strange ideas about reality and time, an artist, all practically unknown. Moledro finds the remnants of their work, and is convinced this one, this one will guide me to the truth. But they never do, they were only mortal.

And so she turns the items over to the other scholars of the clan; this isn't what I was looking for, she says, every time, placing a complete set of fae bones on the table. But I'm getting closer, she follows, without fail.

Her findings are always slightly macabre. This is where the truth is, she promises, eyes hollow, a slight smile.

And she'll find it.

One day.
