Remiel does not know of a time when she did not believe in the Light. Her parents were incredibly devoted to the cause of the light, and Remiel followed in their footsteps. She was encouraged to leave home at an early age to learn to fight the shade, and that is exactly what she did. Remiel is entirely devoted to her cause; she has never for a moment doubted that she is doing the right thing. Whenever she is asked about why she would give up her entire life for a cause, she simply stares the asker down and says For the night is dark and full of terrors.

While Freya can know from a touch whether or not a soul is able to be saved from the shade, it is Remiel who brings them to her. Those who have been shade-touched must make it past Remiel before they even have a chance of a cure. Remiel holds her belief that light is the only way, and that, as the God of Light, Ilona must be protected at all costs. Those who mean Ilona harm or are unable to be saved from the shade are Remiel's responsibility. It is the least favourite part of her job, but it is her sacred duty, and she must uphold it.
