He knows something is wrong. Ever since the imperial showed up at their camp. Ever since his mother had tried to kill her.

"What's wrong with her?" he asks.

His older sister's eyes glow out at him. She shakes her head. "It isn't something you can fix."

He watches her go, not understanding. Nobody can explain it to him. Or nobody will.

And the imperial is beginning to take an interest in him. She talks to him, shares meals. He likes her. He thinks that she is kind and that maybe just... got off on the wrong foot with the Clan.

But he cannot shake the look of horror and fear on his mother's face the first time she sees them together.

"What's wrong?" he asks.

His mother suddenly appears ancient. "It's nothing," she says, pulling him close under her wing. "I love you, Ahlrada."

He is confused as he presses against her. "I love you too, mama."
