Cassandra
Dowager Matriarch
When Cassandra was young, she wandered the world without purpose, without clan-home, and without Charge. Her eyes were hooded and gray, and she knew no Flight. She was Firstborn, she was progenitor. Her only companion was Cedric, a little Fae whose origins were as uncertain as her own, but whose allegiance and camaraderie she was guaranteed. She didn't know why Cedric showed her such loyalty, or even a time before him, but she knew it as Truth, the way she knew also that she was Cassandra, and that she was Firstborn.

She and Cedric traveled far, for how long she did not know, through all the lands of all the Flights. They rested for a time in Shadow, in Lightning, and Water. But as they reached the Ashfall Waste, and as Cassandra breathed in the sooty air and felt the dark volcanic earth hot beneath her claws, she knew it to be clan-home, and this too became Truth.

Her eyes colored orange, the oppressive heat became as a mother's embrace, and Cedric changed to mirror her. She hailed the Flamecaller and swore to Her allegiance, and pleaded for a place within Her Flight. This she was granted, and so Cassandra carved from the rock of the Emberglow Hearth a clan-home for her and her own. She and Cedric came together and became as one, and Cassandra bore three children who filled the clan-home with their playing and squabbling and joy. Shortly before her children hatched, a Pearlcatcher named Corbin came to them for shelter, bringing with him two young hatchlings, and they became Clan. The hatchlings became sisters to her children, who soon filled the clan-home with their playing and squabbling and joy. Cassandra was Matriarch, Cassandra was progenitor, Cassandra was content.

***

Then came the Riot of Rot. By this time the children were grown enough to make the journey to the Plaguebringer's lands, and so Cassandra brought her Clan to the Scarred Wasteland. In this diseased country Cassandra would be forever changed. While here they found both Nightshade, an abandoned pustule of an egg which hatched the mighty Tundra whose blood still runs in her Clan, and Reave, a venerable member older even than Cassandra herself, it was here too that the Wyrmwound laid its blistering touch upon Cassandra's scales.

Negotiations with a rival Clan leader drew her a step too near the edge of the Wyrmwound, that cauldron of disease brewed by the Plaugebringer Herself. As her rival fled in panic, Cassandra found herself bound in frozen rictus, forced to allow the contagion to cling to her. Her crimson-charcoal coat cracked and blackened, green blisters formed along her joints, and most agonizing of all, her great maw split and grew wider, wider, and wider still, ending at last under the shoulder of her wing.

After the incident, Cassandra slowly became the dark monstrosity she is today. In the days that followed she withdrew into herself, becoming colder, meaner, distancing herself from her Clan to whom she was once a warm protector, mother and Matriarch both. The agony of the Wyrmwound's touch is ever present in Cassandra's mind, and Cassandra's pain echoes throughout her Clan, unavoidable, unwavering, and unending.

That is, of course, until Cedric's journey to the Starwood Strand. But that is another tale.
