Nishikigoi

The famed Tundra with the patchwork pelt approaches you with a smile, warmly inviting you to step inside for a while. She introduces herself as co-founder of the clan. Her purpose here, she explains, is to help out wanderers to find their own purpose in life, having had similar experiences when she was younger. She invites you to stay as long as you need - "And by the way, my name's Nishikigoi!" she calls over her shoulder as she pads away.

Nishikigoi was born in the the Wandering Contagion. She was a special breed of Tundra, coats having been singed short after years of being near the Wyrmwound. Their ancestors had made their home here, and they weren't going to just abandon this place they had accustomed to live in after years of adapting.

Nishikigoi, so named because of her patterns, longed to know more about the world beyond the Plague domain. Surely there must be something other than rotting and disease way out there for her to discover. As an adolescent, she loved to look through parchments in her local library. One day she hit the jackpot, discovering a book on Tundras and the Ice region they were native to. Not only that, but there were many different lands to explore! Looking left and right, she quickly swiped the book for herself.

Nishikigoi announced to her parents that she was leaving to embark on a journey. They agreed, deciding that she was pretty much an adult anyway and could take care of herself. And so she set off, visiting the Sea of a Thousand Currents, containing the fish she was named after. The Tangled Wood shared many similarities with her home she disliked - dark, creepy creatures everywhere! Though at least they weren't rotting. The Shifting Expense was way too high tech and obsessed with work for her liking. She didn't quite feel at home anywhere she went, and decided to make her way to the Southern Icefield. That was the promised land of Tundras, right?

Nishikigoi made her way to her next destination, the Ashfall Waste. Lucky her, for she was just in time for the Flameforger's Festival! She was captivated by the festival's dancing flames and dedication to metalwork, a stark difference from the Riot of Rot back home. After the festivities for the day were over, she wandered the land until she came to the Molten Scar. Tired and looking for a place to stay for the night, she had just sat down to take a short break before she felt an incredibly painful blast of magic creep up her spine. Shocked, she looked up to find one incredibly angry Fae spreading her wings agitatedly.

Nishikigoi, being the rather naive, innocent Tundra she was, took the smaller dragon's sign of aggression as a sign of welcome. Happily introducing herself and flicking her tail, she attempted to know the Fae better over the next few days. The other dragon had been dumbfounded, but let her stay (outside of course), seeing that she wasn't an immediate threat to her. Eventually, she relented and told Nishikigoi her name, Kari, and showed her around the festivities. Nishikigoi realised that Kari was quite the hermit, so she was very grateful that she would offer to spend time with her.

Surprisingly, Kari was very entertaining after she sort of opened up to Nishikigoi. The Tundra found it endearing how she would try to act tough but fail, and constantly insist she wasn't flustered when Nishikigoi teased her (though her fluttering/flailing wings told a different story). Although she eventually learned to decipher it over the days she stayed with Kari, Nishikigoi pretended to still be unable to read Fae body language for the sake of her friend's sanity. Kari found comfort in her constant deadpan manner and if her armor was pierced, she would most likely react in defensive panic.

Months after she first arrived, Nishikigoi decided to resume her journey. Not wanting to be parted, she asked Kari to join her, and to her great surprise and joy, the Fae actually agreed. After a very quick destroying of Kari's tree sap nest, the Fae perched on Nishikigoi's back as the two set off to the Northern Icefield. The ever-lazy Kari made a request to visit the Wind region as she had heard many things about their relaxed lifestyle, and Nishikigoi obliged.

After a week of trekking, the duo arrived at the Zephyr Steppes. Talking to the local Skydancers and Spirals made it clear that they had pretty much nothing to do all day. Kari being Kari adapted to this lifestyle almost immediately. Nishikigoi at first resisted, still wanting to travel to the Southern Icefield, but then she realised that she actually really did like casually hanging out with all her friends, without any worry in the world. She had known said friends for like an hour, but still. Nishikigoi and Kari managed to find an abandoned cave near the Reedcleft Ascent, promptly settling into it after a few days of makeover magic.

Over the next couple of years, their clan flourished more and more. Nishikigoi never named it, just referred to it as "the clan". Her goal was to help travellers like herself find what they wanted in life, and where to stay. Having travelled far and wide herself, she was able to give good advice based on a dragon's preferences. Of course, all through this Kari usually did nothing but eye the offending dragons warily. Most came and went, but some visitors instead decided to stay in the clan, liking the friendly atmosphere and carefree lifestyle of the Wind region. Nishikigoi was delighted to have such a bustling group of friends that were almost like family to her.

However, in Nishikigoi's heart, Kari always was number one. She had been the Tundra's first friend, and now Nishikigoi wanted to be more. Over the course of a few years, she had come to a realisation that she was in love with Kari. Unimaginable. She was pretty much the opposite of what Nishikigoi stood for - being antisocial, lazy and having a sharp tongue at times. At the same time, she couldn't deny that was why she was drawn to the Fae, and lately she had noticed how the smaller dragon was always the most mellow and understanding towards her.

Deciding to try her luck at confessing, Nishikigoi asked Raisin to make a nice gift for Kari, with compensation, of course. A few days later, she was presented with decorative flame lanterns that Raisin explained could be enchanted by the wearer to hover around their wings. They both hoped that Kari would appreciate it, being from the Fire region. Nervously, Nishikigoi approached Kari one night, with the intention of presenting to her the gift. To her great surprise, Kari nervously blustered her way through her confession first. Thrilled, Nishikigoi accepted, giving her the lanterns and becoming mates. To this day, Nishikigoi is the one dragon Kari shows open affection to - the Fae can be seen perching on Nishikigoi's furry back and snuggling into the patched fur of the Tundra during cold nights.
