The Flightmeld Clan

Overview

The Flightmeld Clan was founded on the principles of inclusion and acceptance. They accept dragons of all breeds, flights, and ideologies, excepting only those dragons who cannot allow others their separate personal choices and freedoms.

Universal Rights
  1. The Right of Self - A dragon's self is always their own, and can never be infringed upon without consent.
  2. The Right of Survival - A dragon is entitled to continue living, and will provided with the resources they need to so.
  3. The Right of Competition - When two dragon's cannot settle a dispute amicably, they are entitled to a fair competition to determine in which manner the dispute will be resolved.
  4. The Right of Equity - To invoke the right of competition, both dragons must be risking something of equal value.

Positions of Power

Clan Leader:
The dragon in charge of clan-wide decisions. They are also the judge of rights in matters where they may have been breeched. The sole exception to this is if they themselves are in a dispute requiring the Right of Competition, in which case the Grand Arbiter would be the judge.

Facilitator:
In charge of facilitating a fair competition between two dragons in dispute.

If a pair of dragons come into conflict in some manner that must be resolved, and they cannot agree on a means of resolving things themselves, they can visit a Facilitator. The Facilitator will find or create some manner of competition in which both dragons feel they have a reasonable chance of victory.

A Facilitator is also in charge of ensuring what is at risk is equitable for both parties if they are in disagreement. If one side is risking less than the other, they can order that something further must be offered to make the dispute equitable. The Facilitator must leave their own views behind, and consider each challenger's culture and beliefs when making this assessment. They are further charged with explaining their reasoning to both challengers, regardless of acceptance by either party.

A dragon that chooses to become a Facilitator is voluntarily placing themselves at the mercy of The Grand Arbiter, and is giving up their right of competition and equity in matters of relating to their duties as Facilitator.

Facilitators are well respected members of the clan, and the position carries a significant amount of social standing for those who care about such things.

The Grand Arbiter:
The Grand Arbiter deals in the matters of ensuring fairness among Facilitators. If a dragon believes that a Facilitator has chosen a competition unfairly, or failed to uphold the right of equity, they can request a review by the the Grand Arbiter.

If the Grand Arbiter finds that a Facilitator has failed in his duty, a new Facilitator is assigned for the challengers, and the Grand Arbiter passes judgement on the Facilitator depending on the severity of the break of duty. Punishment can range from simple instructions to improve their understanding in certain areas, to exile if the breech is egregious and purposeful.

Interaction between Facilitators and the Grand Arbiter is strictly forbidden, and any questioning is done through intermediaries. If the Grand Arbiter is personally involved in a right of challenge, the clan leader will fill in as Facilitator.

Given this restriction, prospective Grand Arbiters need to be extremely careful about their interactions, as if they're found to have had any significant interaction with Facilitators, they would be ineligible for the position.

The Grand Arbiter is a highly respected position, second only to the clan leader.

Individual Contributions

A dragon is allowed to contribute to the clan in any way they see fit, as great importance is placed in the ability to choose one's own path. The Flightmeld Clan holds value as being a matter of personal perspective, and strives not to force a dragon into a task they don't find fulfilling.

That means that how any given clan member contributes tends to differ wildly.

Crimion and Firasure, for example, will hunt and fight, brining back the spoils for the clan larder and treasury because they enjoy the thrill of it.

Shadow will contribute her time organizing books at the library, and finding interesting tidbits of history in old tomes that could help.

Even Mana, who prefers nothing more than lounging and chatting, will frequently do so in the hatchery, keeping an eye on the hatchlings and intervening should they get themselves in trouble.

The only thing expected of a dragon is that they do contribute. No matter the form or the relative impact of the contribution. Archmage Jisa believes that a dragon's effort to contribute in whatever capacity they can is what truly shows that they feel themselves part of the collective whole.

That being said, not contributing is not a cause for expulsion, but rather concern. Dragons seen to never be contributing will likely be talked to about it, with efforts made to help them find a means of doing so that they can find joy in, or helping them work through problems that may be sapping their motivation. If a dragon is truly belligerent and insists on living in the clan and truly giving nothing back, they will simply find themselves pitied and ostracized, mostly ignored and only their basic needs provided for.

The only times this state of affairs may change is in times of extreme crisis. If food truly becomes scarce, the clan is facing a serious natural disaster, or there is some other existential threat to the clans continued existence, resident dragons capable of helping will be asked to assist to ensure the clan doesn't collapse. However, this situation is entirely theoretical as it has yet to occur.

Founding
The clan was founded by Archmage Archmage Jisa.
