Valorath's Clan

Nobody is quite certain who founded the clan of Valorath, as the progenitors either left or were exalted long ago, along with those who knew them. Some say the progenitors were powerful spirits of shadow, sent by the Shadowbinder herself to do her incomprehensible bidding. Others say that's silly.

Valorath is like a family, and new members are always welcome among their ranks, no matter the birthflight, breed, or even species- while primarily a dragon clan, lost & wandering beastfolk are also permitted entry to the clan for as long as they can remain peaceful. The only thing the clan asks of each individual is to support the group in any way they can, and to swear lifelong loyalty to the Shadowbinder, even once they leave the clan. However, members are of course allowed to pray and pay tribute to whichever patron they wish (many from other clans will maintain shrines to the deities of their birthflight) as long as they don't forget to acknowledge the Shadowbinder's influence in their lives.

The clan is organized not by one leader but by a council of the strongest and wisest dragons. When it comes time for a council member to leave or be exalted, the clan will come together to put forward anonymous votes for who should replace them, and the winning dragon will be groomed over a period of months in the duties of the council before assuming the council position.

Along with the Shadowbinder, the council prays to a lesser spirit of shadow whom they call the Maiden (or just Maid) of Void. It's rumored that Valorath is actually the Maiden's name, and the clan was just named after her. Some believe the Maiden to be a half-mortal daughter of the Shadowbinder, whereas others see her as simply a servant. While the clan reveres the Shadowbinder as a kind of spiritual matriarch, the clan sees the Maiden as the clan's very own guardian spirit, an unseen entity helping or hindering the clan directly.
