Loki and Dondi led their two hatchlings around the fairgrounds, each parent keeping an eye on their young charges in their own way; Dondi by scent, and Loki by peering about with his large, dark eyes. The dark-colored tundra and fae babies chirped and squeaked with excitement at each new, glittering sight.
"Oh look, Dairo and Honour are here!" Dondi said. "And...they're leaving. In a hurry. What're they in such a rush for?"
"I could not begin to guess, my dear," Loki said. "Oh, but look what they were doing! A rock-breaking booth! That sounds...very physical..."
"Hey, kids! You wanna bust a rock open and see what's inside?" Dondi asked. She smiled as the young ones burbled their assent. "Two rocks, please."
Once they were handed over, the two doting parents helped their charges break the rocks. Dondi smiled as her tundra daughter pounced on the rock and rolled around with it in mock ferocity, letting her play with it for a while until, sensing that the novelty of it was wearing off, she ever so casually tapped it with one of the offered hammers and cracked it open for her.
Loki, meanwhile, was overseeing his other daughter. "No need for an arcane bolt," he advised the younger fae. "That's far too blunt for this task. No, instead, you just focus on the many cracks in the rock...see them? Burrow into them, concentrate on how they are so many tiny fissures in the surface. Feel that? Now, go deeper...deeper...seek out the secrets in the rock..." Long moments passed, and then, suddenly, the ball of rock cracked open along all the microscopic fissures and folds that had formed it when it had been wet mud. "Well done!" Loki said.
Having collected their prizes and thanked the generous Imperial for sharing them, they ventured further down the row of booths.
"Oh, these look interesting," Loki said, seeing the display of mineral specimens waiting to be identified. "This purple one looks very familiar..." He stroked the diamond-shaped block.
"That's just because it matches your eyes," Dondi teased.
"Well, I must say, purple -is- my favorite color," the fae said, fawning against Dondi's similarly-hued fur.
"-Lavender-, thank you very much..." Dondi started, but she heard her daughters making excited noises again. "What is it, shugs?"
"This one smells like...like..." The tundra hatchling sniffed at a tightly-sealed vial that contained a yellow substance, her keen nose able to pick up the tiny trace smells that only barely escaped the container. She wrinkled her nose. "Kind of like Arao. Ugh."
"This one looks like a flower," the fae said, of another stone that looked as if it had been carved. She sniffed at it delicately. "But it doesn't smell like one."
"Well, let's look at these notes that are put out. Then how bout you and Daddy put your minds together, and you can write down your answers."
As the three of them conferred, Dondi sniffed at the vial, herself. "Oh, honey," she said. "Arao smells...way more aggressive than this does. Phew."
