Pomona is beautiful!!

If Heaven finds out about this then Jett is in so much trouble. I'm really starting to like his character again too. Heaven better not do anything to him or anyone else because of this.

aaaAAA POMONA IS SO CUTE

Also I am absolutely down with this fling. It actually makes me like Jett more because you know what? He's doing what he Wants To now. I am a little concerned about what Heaven's reaction will be ("She just hoped Heaven hadn't been planning on a nest right away" ohhhh boy) but honestly? Worth it. And Jett probably thinks so too.

@Midwinter

Thanks!

I'm glad Jet is becoming likable again! I mean, he's certainly not the most good or heroic of characters, but I've always had a soft spot for him regardless.

@Leopardmask

Thank you!!!

It sure has put a wrench in her plans, that's for sure! And I don't think Jett has any regrets about it!

There was no reason to acknowledge their existence right now, there were much more pressing matters to deal with. It was the day of the royal wedding, and the entire clan was required to come. With the small population, it would prove difficult to wriggle out of this one. Seaberry didn't have any regrets about spending the previous night with Jett, but that didn't mean she wanted to see his wife-to-be, especially knowing what was hiding in the back. Heaven was already guilty of one murder, she didn't want to give her any reason to add another to that count. Still, it wasn't all bad. Seeing as the wedding would be taking place at the palace, it provided the perfect opportunity to get the Sisters of Virtue up to the beacon fire to get their own lanterns and give them protection against the curse. Despite herself, she was beginning to grow fond of the sisters, and she could tell they were warming up to her as well. It was almost like having friends. They arrived just as they were locking up the tavern. Virtue and Hayze looked nervous, while Hollyn wore her ever-present grin. Seaberry didn't blame their nerves. Virtue asked, glancing around as if she expected to be attacked. "We're all good," Seaberry confirmed, pushing her nerves down where she couldn't feel them. Confidence was half the key to survival. But then again, so was knowing when to quit. Hollyn chattered as they group walked along in silence, talking about how excited she was to be going to a wedding and how beautiful the ceremony was going to be. Her sister's didn't correct her, just exchanged solemn glances. They had heard enough from Seaberry to know this was not going to be a great jovial affair. Seaberry could tell from the way Virtue's tail twitched that she was once again thinking about how she wanted to leave the city. The walk seemed to pass by all too quickly. Soon, they found themselves walking up the spiral staircases and into the throne room. Usually, events like this would be held in the ballroom of a palace, but clearly the royal couple wanted to make even more of a show of power. It made Seaberry sick, though she pressed on. Pretty much everyone was gathered already. She made quick eye contact with her mother, who was joking around with the two idiot dragons she had always been complaining about protecting. She didn't seem to mind it now. Seaberry hadn't seen her mother laugh in years. The thought prompted a wave of bitterness within her. She chose instead to focus on the light of the fire, hoping this whole ordeal would be over soon enough that they could grab that lanterns and leave. From what Seaberry had heard, this was the first time she had actually officially appeared in any position of power, and she was loving every minute of it. Heaven had taken her place on one side of the throne, in full view of everyone. A silence had fallen over the gathered dragons, and no one dared to speak. The silence stretched onward, and Jett failed to appear. An hour passed, and the gathered dragons began to get restless. Heaven's face was unreadable as quiet conversation began. Where was their king? Seaberry tried to stay as calm and still as possible. This had nothing to do with her, right? This was just a bit if fun, nothing more. Another hour passed, and Heaven stood up, clearly ready to address the group. "Well, it appears our king has decided not to show today," Heaven's voice was surprisingly calm considering she had just been stood up on her wedding day. "But we must not let such things dissuade us from continuing. By failing to show up to take me as his queen, he has hereby handed the crown over to me. I am the new ruler of this kingdom as of this moment." "But you can't!" Age spoke up, suddenly looking terrified when she realized she had challenged the dragon who had killed her father. "That's not how this works! You can't just name yourself queen!" "Oh can't I?" Heaven's eyes gleamed. "I was under the impression that when your father formed the clan, he took little care to form any official rules of succession. Besides, you really think Jett has been running the clan this whole time? If it weren't for me, the clan would have fallen apart because he saw some shiny coin or silly girl." The imperial made dead eye contact with Seaberry. The spiral stared back evenly, standing her ground despite the way her heart felt like it was going to jump out of her chest. "I refuse. I gave my crown over to Jett, and I would like it back," Age narrowed her eyes. Seaberry could see her legs shaking. Behind her, there were gasps of surprise as her sons took in what she had said. Clearly, they hadn't been told the truth about their roots. "Honey," Heaven cooed with false sweetness. "Jett forfeited his crown by failing to show up. I made the terms and conditions very clear. You can't just ask for the crown back and expect me to fall at your feet like the rest of this clan. Your blood means nothing, true power must be earned." There was a growl from the edge of the room, and Ulf began to advance, teeth bared and hackles raised. He was joined by Nevaeh. The imperial was larger than her sister, and something burned in her eyes that told Seaberry it was far more than just out of the desire to protect her friend. Because we will gladly fight to rid the city of your tyranny," Ulf spat. "Think wisely about your options, because after what you did to Topaz and Khepri, I won't hesitate to rip your throat out should I get the chance. Our shared blood means nothing to me anymore," Nevaeh growled. As she spoke, something flickered in Heaven's golden eyes, a break in the calm. Then, she laughed. "Oh sister dearest, I'm sorry but I don't think you're capable of such an act!" Heaven chortled. "See, this is where sentiment gets you. This is where getting attached lands you. Do you think I'm going to cry because Jett left me? No, I'm going to move on. You are and have always been weak." "You are wrong!" Nevaeh spat. "My attachments don't make me weak, they make me strong! I will fight to the death to protect not only my best friend and boyfriend, but to protect my daughter! Even if I die, I know she will be well looked after by those who care about me. You will fighting only to protect yourself, which means you have far more to lose. Besides, you really think that you can take on the both of us?" "You're bluffing," Heaven said, quietly. "You'd never actually kill your sister." "Something died in you when Zunde died, you haven't been my sister for a long time," Nevaeh said. "I lost my sister the day you failed to be there for me on the day I needed you most, and when you failed to let me be there for you on your darkest day. You know me, Heaven. You know I'm not lying." Heaven paused for a moment, and Seaberry held her breath. She was sure, for a moment, that the imperial would attack anyways, but she knew when she was beaten. She backed down. She held her head high as she slunk towards the door, letting her scales glint in the firelight. "You've made a very powerful enemy," Heaven warned. "You haven't seen the last of me." "But why?" Age asked, seeming a little more confident now. "Why would you do this Heaven? Once, you were my best friend. You can be that again. Give up this crazy power-hungry quest of yours and accept the way things are. You don't need power to get respect, and you don't need a crown to be important." "If you think that, then you understand nothing," Heaven shook her head. "Who do you think is going to be remembered? A powerful queen, or a lowly gardener? Death is permanent, your legacy is the only way to live on, otherwise someday we will all fade from memory and then what will we be? Nothing." With that, the imperial slipped out, leaving the room in stunned silence. Age gawked at the door, and then it sank in. The tundra turned to face her new subjects. Ulf and Larkin were the first to bow, followed by Nevaeh and Accident. One by one, the gathered dragons sank in respect to their new queen, save for Bonegnasher, who stared up at his mother in wide-eyed excitement. Even the Sisters of Virtue bowed, though they did not know the new queen themselves. "Please, honestly, none of this is necessary. I may be your queen now, but all of you are valued friends. I am no more important than any of you," Age said, clearly overwhelmed by the show of solidarity. "Honestly, I wouldn't be here if it weren't for all of you. So really, I have you to thank. You are making this kingdom what it is, and because of that, anyone who wants to meet tomorrow to lay down a proper system of government is welcome to join me here at noon. A strong clan needs the stability of strong leadership, and we are in need of a good, strong start. I need your support to be able to do that." Seaberry could hardly believe the words coming out of Age's mouth. She could hardly believe the battle had been so easily won. She might just be overly cynical, but to Seaberry, it seemed too easy. It didn't make sense for Heaven to back down to quickly, not if she had gone to the lengths she had to secure the throne in the first place. Something told her that this wasn't over. The streets were cold and dark around her, and the moon only faintly shone through the fog. She was completely and utterly alone, which was how it should be. She was a monster. She had tortured another dragon because she was in love with a boy who didn't love her back. She had been so stupid, how could she have not seen any of this? Suddenly, her self-loathing was interrupted by the tremor of her antennae. Someone was near, and they were looking for something. It was too distant to tell who it was, but Scoril could swear there was something familiar about it, unless it was her imagination getting to her. The sensation grew stronger as the dragon grew nearer, and despite herself, she found her heart lift as it became undeniably recognizable. A few moments later, Jett sauntered in, wearing the smirk that made her feel weak and warm. "Hey, Score!" Jett grinned. "I was wondering where you had gone off to!" "What are you doing here?" Scoril asked, turning away. "I thought I made myself clear." This hurt too much. "You did, and I'm here," Jett said. "Honestly, you won't hear this much, and I'm not saying it again, but I've been an idiot. Last night, I did something I wanted for the first time in a long time, and I realized I don't want to be king, I never did. My best memories are the times we spent together, getting ourselves into trouble and driving everyone crazy!" Scoril felt her heart lift, only for it be to shattered a moment later. "You're my best friend, Scoril. You get me. I don't care what Heaven does anymore, I don't want to crown, I just want things to return to the way they were," Jett admitted. "So, what to you say?" He held out a hand. Scoril knew she was foolish not to take this opportunity, regardless of whether Jett liked her back. "I'm in." "Good," Jett smirked. "My partner in crime is back. I can't wait to see what we get up to!" "Me too!" Scoril grinned. It looked like things were getting back to normal. The corridor was empty. She hadn't been planning on doing this so soon, but desperate times called for desperate measures. Seaberry, Ulf and Accident are all level 7 now. Depending on how future Coli days go, Heaven's 'I'll be back' boast is either going to be some great foreshadowing, or an incredibly lame claim that means nothing. For the sake of the plot, I hope it's the former, not the latter.

"You are wrong!" Nevaeh spat. "My attachments don't make me weak, they make me strong! I will fight to the death to protect not only my best friend and boyfriend, but to protect my daughter! Even if I die, I know she will be well looked after by those who care about me. You will fighting only to protect yourself, which means you have far more to lose. Besides, you really think that you can take on the both of us?"

"You're bluffing," Heaven said, quietly. "You'd never actually kill your sister."

"Something died in you when Zunde died, you haven't been my sister for a long time," Nevaeh said. "I lost my sister the day you failed to be there for me on the day I needed you most, and when you failed to let me be there for you on your darkest day. You know me, Heaven. You know I'm not lying."

Heaven paused for a moment, and Seaberry held her breath. She was sure, for a moment, that the imperial would attack anyways, but she knew when she was beaten. She backed down. She held her head high as she slunk towards the door, letting her scales glint in the firelight.

"You've made a very powerful enemy," Heaven warned. "You haven't seen the last of me."

"But why?" Age asked, seeming a little more confident now. "Why would you do this Heaven? Once, you were my best friend. You can be that again. Give up this crazy power-hungry quest of yours and accept the way things are. You don't need power to get respect, and you don't need a crown to be important."

"If you think that, then you understand nothing," Heaven shook her head. "Who do you think is going to be remembered? A powerful queen, or a lowly gardener? Death is permanent, your legacy is the only way to live on, otherwise someday we will all fade from memory and then what will we be? Nothing."

With that, the imperial slipped out, leaving the room in stunned silence.

I need your support to be able to do that."

Seaberry could hardly believe the words coming out of Age's mouth.

Scoril hardly knew where she was.

"I was wondering where you had gone off to!"

"What are you doing here?" Scoril asked, turning away.

My best memories are the times we spent together, getting ourselves into trouble and driving everyone crazy!"

Scoril felt her heart lift, only for it be to shattered a moment later.

"I'm in."

"Good," Jett smirked. "My partner in crime is back. I can't wait to see what we get up to!"

"Me too!" Scoril grinned. It looked like things were getting back to normal.

Heaven glanced over her shoulder to make sure no one was following her. The corridor was empty. She hadn't been planning on doing this so soon, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

Satisfied that she was alone, Heaven slipped into the tower and made her way down the stairs towards a crumbled portion of the wall. Ignoring the thin gap and the sharp thorns that barred the entrance, Heaven slipped through to the magic district...

Pink sure likes giving me Coli pulls recently.

All I could think of at the end was that old song, "Bing-bong, the witch is dead!" Although in this case, "Bing-bong, the witch is gone!" might work better. But anyway~ Wow, where do I begin? I loved seeing this chapter through Seaberry's eyes. Her analysis of the place and the other dragons was pretty cool. And ulp, Bailaduel bonding with Age's sons -- yeah, that's going to be a bit of a sore point, isn't it? Moving on, gosh, the confrontation in the throne room was amazing! Age standing up for herself, followed by Ulf, and oh my gosh, Nevaeh's own speech! Heaven's arguments about her claim to the throne are going to fall pretty quickly when Seaberry's kids are found out, I think. I kiiiiinda want her "I'll be back!" claim to just fizzle out. That would honestly be hilarious: "Hey, whatever happened to Heaven, anyway?" -- "Who cares?" XDD
