Today’s species: the saiga antelope!

The saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) is a critically endangered antelope found on the Eurasian steppe. Their large, flexible noses may serve to clean dusty air while the saiga breaths, which helps when the movement of herds stirs up dust. Other suggested functions include communication and mate selection. Saiga are migratory animals- currently, their migration routes pass through five countries. However, man-made obstacles such as fences and pipelines can trap them, and the herd may starve to death. Other threats include hunting and climatic fluctuations.

The common skate (Dipturus batis) is a critically endangered ray, the largest skate in the world, up to 9.4 feet (2.85 meters) long, 6.6 feet (2 meters) wide, and 249 pounds (113 kilograms). Though previously abundant in the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, it has been overfished and caught as bycatch. It can live up to a century and females lay around 40 egg cases in summer. It is a bottom feeder, but may also eat fish in the open sea.
