Instead of lynching a player every day, the Privateers choose to sail in a certain direction (north, south, east or west), in the hopes of reaching their wincon.
Each tile moved has a chance to encounter pirates, which in turn have a chance to kill players.
There are helpful and hindering locations on the board. Be wary.
