Often referred to as gargoyles, there’s many who believe this species of dragons is long since lost. Others believe them to be nothing but legends, after all moving statues sound impossible to them. It is considered just a story to tell hatchlings.
These dragons are anything but legend. Once they were the guardians of ancient cities that have long since been lost in Dragonhome. The dragons had the unique ability to turn their bodies to stone after sitting still for a long period of time. They could remain aware of their surroundings while being a statue, the effects replacing sleep. When turned to stone, the dragons would become rooted in place, making them harder to push over though not impossible, it was like trying to move any other stone statue. The statue process also allowed the dragons to heal quickly, often starting to turn to stone after being injured or poisoned so that their body could heal. These abilities made them excellent at guarding various city entrances and buildings.
These dragons cannot swim, at all. Their bodies naturally sink in water and sinking causes them to panic. When they begin to panic their body will respond to the threat by turning them to stone and causing them to become dormant. While dormant they may not be fully aware of what’s around them over time, this is a defense mechanism to stop them from losing their mind in solitude when there is nothing they can do about it, it is the closest they get to what others would call fully being asleep. This effect will continue until they are brought back to solid ground and a day has passed. If stuck in water, they will sit at the bottom and wait for someone to drag them back out to land.
When in a panicked state for a long period of time their body can be shattered like a normal statue.
The dragons have slowly begun to resurface and make new homes above ground. These dragons do not find their way to the surface on their own, rather their statue forms are dug up by other dragons and brought up as part of an archeological find only to find the statue come to life.
