Contest Rules
1) The goal is to design a machine that completes a task through a series of action and reaction steps. If you've ever seen a "Rune Goldberg machine" or played the games "Mousetrap" or "the Incredible Machine", that is the general idea of the contest. The theme of this task is
Makes a Dessert.
2) Your machine must have a
minimum of 3 steps to be accepted. For each of the first two weeks there will be a "mini-contest" including all machines meeting a certain number of steps. There is no maximum!
3) All Flights can enter. Maximum of
one entry per week, per person. The entries may be edited/updated (or replaced entirely!) within the same week that they are submitted. They may be entirely unique from each other, or may be modifications on the same theme. A single person may only win one prize, regardless of number of entries submitted.
4) "
Action and reaction" steps are to be indicated by a
labelled number on the image and
described in text below the image.
5) Images should be readable at
600px wide, which is the size that images are rescaled to fit within the bounds of a forum post.
6) The last deadline for entry submission is
23:29 site time on
July 29, 2017

Dessert being assembled: Ice-cream cone
Action and Reaction sequence:
- The scroll is rolled down an incline and hits the axe handle
- The axe handle rotates to complete the electrical connection
- The power pack powers the motor to turn the chain connected to the ice cream scooper
- The ice cream is scooped and launched through the air to land on the cone
How will entries be judged?
1) The series of actions can all work towards a single, simple goal (I.e. 4 steps in sequence where the final step is to shake sprinkles onto an ice cream cone), or act as parts of an assembly line for a more complex goal (i.e. 1st step churning the ice cream cascades into a second step scooping the ice cream, triggering a 3rd step coating the ice cream in chocolate, and 4th step to add the sprinkles).
2) We will be judging entries based on 4 principles:
i)
Use of Flight Rising setting - did you incorporate elements of the site, such as references from site lore, apparel, familiars, item descriptions, etc?
ii)
Physicality - do the components follow a consistent set of physics/magic? i.e. are there blocks physically supporting them in space, are the moving parts or magical parts acting within suspension of disbelief for the FR setting.
iii)
Polish/Style - Did you render your machine clearly and with an obvious level of care? i.e. the difference between a clean pen drawing vs. a scribbled pencil sketch.
iv)
Creativity - did you use interesting and original ideas? How far did you go to make something simple become needlessly complicated?
3) The Grand Prize will be awarded to the entry that is judged to be the machine that best incorporates Creativity, Style, Physicality, and Adherence to the FR setting.
