Kazul, a young and determined Guardian dragon, left the isles of Sornieth in search of what she needed to protect in order to become a full-fledged adult Guardian. She searched far and wide, but did not find anything desireable to guard. Nothing under the waves, nothing on land, and nothing in the sky.
One day as she was searching (for she dared not give up) she came upon a human. This human appeared to be weak and fragile. Curious, Kazul observed this human for many days, keeping well out of sight. Until one day when a Spiral dragon came whisking by to stop and inspect the human as well. Kazul watched as the other dragon conversed with the human. The human was at first quite alarmed by the sight of the dragon, but as they were talking, the human became quite excited and eagerly mounted the Spiral dragon's back. In surprise, Kazul watched as the pair flew off towards the dragon isles. Concerned about what they were doing, Kazul followed after them.
The Spiral dragon was swift and caused Kazul to make more of an effort to keep up without being seen. Despite her magnificent size, Kazul could not match the Spiral's speed without making her presence known. It wasn't long until the Spiral dragon landed on the Zephyr Steppes of the Windswept Plateau. The human wasted no time in dismounting the dragon. It wobbled, held its stomach, and placed a hand over its mouth; apparently sick from the swirling ride on the back of the dragon. Bemused, Kazul landed and decided to speak with the Spiral dragon and the human.
"Greetings Spiral. What brings you here with this creature?"
"Greetings Guardian. This human was seeking adventure and new sights. The obvious choice was to bring it to the Wind clans. They're always traveling, such as myself. What brings you here?" The Spiral countered, eyeing Kazul suspiciously.
"I'm on my
Search. This human caught my interest on the isle you acquired it from. Are you going to keep it?" Kazul asked, unsure of the Spiral's further intentions with the human.
"Goodness no! I have no need for a human." The Spiral dragon began contorting itself, straining to keep its focus on their conversation. "You can have it if you want. I'd feel bad if you eat it though. Would've eaten it myself had I been hungry. Kind of scrawny though..." The Spiral's thoughts drifted away and without another word the Spiral took off; leaving the human with the Guardian dragon.
Slightly annoyed by the Spiral's abrupt departure, Kazul looked down at the tiny being standing there, who seemed to be suddenly aware of Kazul's size and presence. Kazul brought her head down lower to get a better look at the human. This action of her's made the human step back with a weary expression upon its face.
"Do not fear, human. I don't intend to harm you." She said in her native tongue of Draconic. The human shook its head in non-understanding.
Oh, perhaps the human doesn't speak my language. Curse that Spiral for leaving before telling me how to converse with it! Kazul thought bitterly.
Looking around, an idea came to Kazul. The Zephyr Steppes was a great place to find Wind Flight dragons who travel far and wide. Surely one of them would know how to speak to the human. Kazul tried to find another dragon that might know the human's language. She flagged other dragons down from the sky and asked them for assistance. A few said they didn't speak human tongues and flew back up into the sky.
Finally one of the Skydancer dragons landed and offered his assistance. "I speak a few human languages. Allow me to try to speak to this one." He brought himself closer to the human and tried out a couple phrases from various languages.
Realizing that these dragons were all trying to speak to it, the human quickly tried to introduce itself and asked the feathered dragon what the other dragon wanted from it. The Skydancer nodded and addressed Kazul.
"This human wishes to know what you want from it. It appears to be speaking its native tongue called
English."
Grateful, Kazul responded. "To be honest I want to know more about this human an why it decided to come here. Why was it alone before? Does it have a name?" Feeling embarrassed by her rush of questions, Kazul quieted for a moment then apologized. "My apologies, Skydancer. I am called Kazul. I am grateful for any translating help you can offer me."
"I am called
Brohl. I shall try my best to translate. I must admit that I am a bit rusty." Brohl then proceeded to relay Kazul's questions to the human.
To be continued.
