The Star Wood Strand is a dense, twisting labyrinth of immeasurable trees, glowing faintly in the fading light of dusk. The buds on the branches quiver as a night breeze coaxes them into bloom, glimmering in the full moonlight. In the southernmost reaches of the forest, where the trees’ roots begin to extend into rivers and sandy beaches that feed the Southern Icefield Sea, tiny white asphodel blossoms peek their heads out of the frosted grass. It is here, along this border of ominous trees and blue-gray foliage that dwells a rowdy clan of young Mageling dragons.

When Tuerie opened her eyes, she was painfully alone.
As she crawled out of her eggshell, her egg tooth dislodged from the tip of her nose and fell into the dead grass in the base of her nest. She stretched her tiny claws and blinked her large eyes, adjusting to the surprising brightness of the trees of the Starwood Strand, despite there being no sun in the sky. The eggshells surrounding her were colorless, crumbling and putrid. They oozed a blackish liquid that stuck the yellow grass in the base of the nest together in clumps. She felt as though something was wrong, but she couldn't decide what exactly it was.
It wasn't until a few hours passed and she grew increasingly hungry that she realized her problem; there was no one there to feed her. She had no siblings tumbling around and bumping up against her tightly folded wings, there was no clan chatter surrounding her nest, and no parent to bring her gnats and aphids. The only sounds about the branch her nest was perched in was a gentle breeze rustling the blooming flowers in the trees.
She was alone. She was alone, and cold, and hungry, and had no idea why she heard nothing but petals gently brushing against one another.
She was alone, and she was scared.
A few days passed, and the pains in her stomach grew unbearable. Her high-pitched cries for help went unnoticed, and the goo that leaked from the rotten eggs around her tasted as poorly as it smelled. The grass stuck to the saliva on her tongue and was impossible to swallow. Her claws were too small to peel up any tree bark, and she was too slow to catch any passing beetles as they puttered past her nest.
Dehydrated, exhausted and feeling entirely empty both from lack of food and affection, she climbed up the side of the nest and clung weakly to its sharp edges with her shaky claws. Slowly, she extended her thin, underdeveloped wings and searched for a meal.
After some time perched like this, she spotted a small moth alight on a branch beneath hers. Her stomach growled ravenously, and without a second thought, Tuerie launched herself from her nest and attempted to glide to safety.
But as she descended, she missed her branch, and as she plummeted towards the ground, fear gripped her stomach harder than any hunger she'd felt. She fell unconscious before making contact with the ground below.

Wings broken by her fall and abandoned by the colony of dragons that used to live in this cold, nearly barren valley where the cold water of the Southern Icefield Sea laps against the sands of the Arcane beaches. Hardly anything grew here, aside from some prickly grass, the Starwood trees, and fields of hardy asphodel flowers.
Despite the general lack of ground-dwelling insects, Tuerie scavenged enough to build quite a bulky frame, and weighing in on the upper-end of the average Fae's size, she quickly perfected her hunting skills. Thought living in solitude, she traveled far to find feast, and it didn't take long before she caught the curious eye of a monster quite larger than herself.
