The Fallen

The Fallen was a group of rogue dragons, exiled from their clans. They were known for their ruthlessness, their ferocity, and above all, their craftiness and intelligence. Though not considered a true clan, it was well-known that all the members shared a common interest: to expand their territory to the ends of the Sunbeam Ruins, exact revenge on the clans that exiled them, and conquer anyone in their way. They hid their secrets well and never revealed them to the outside world. Part 1: The Last Goodbye
*Edited

Darkness. Her world was an unending sheet of black.

Then the sound hit her. Was that...cheering? But it was fading quickly. Onawa tried to open her eyelids, but something stopped her.

No. Not yet, a voice told her, deep within the recesses of her mind. She obeyed it, feeling the hackles raise on her back. Only when the cheering faded away altogether did she dare open her eyes.

"No..." she whispered, struggling to get up. "No...this can't be..."

The ground below her was littered with bodies, for as far as she could see. She took a step forward, only for her foot to go straight through empty air. She yelped as she tumbled down a small slope, before coming to stop. Groaning, she turned her head, only to choke back a scream and furiously scrabble backwards.

One of Aether and Saphira's newborn children stared back at her, his eyes glassy and lifeless, his body lying a few metres away. His siblings nearby were in the same condition, their heads torn off and separated from their bodies. Whoever had done this had killed them in the most heartless method Onawa could think of. She could just imagine a large dragon looming over the terrified hatchlings, picking them off one by one, biting their necks and shaking them hard, then... She closed her eyes, trying to stop the images from forming, but they came anyways. They were so young," she thought sadly. "They'd barely had time to even open their eyes when....

Memories rushed back to her. Most of the clan had been busy prepping for the hatching of Saphira's children, when the attack came. They'd been anticipating it for a couple of days, but not at that very moment. They were also weakened by the disease the Fallen had planted in the clan, which had killed many clan members. Many were dead before they could even recover from the ambush and fight back.

No one truly knew the Fallen; not the hierarchy of the group, not the identity of their members — for they were never seen without their masks —, not even who their leader was.

They'd came through the tunnels. Kilandri had stationed Maren and Smaug there at the time, and the Phantom was the last line of defence, but even then it hadn't been enough to stop them. The battle took place in the tunnels, with gave them an advantage. For though the Clan of Horizon's Edge was sorely outnumbered, this was their territory, and no one knew the twisting tunnels better than them. For a moment, it'd seemed like they had a chance of winning. But soon, the Fallen managed to bring the battle above ground, and they knew it was game over.

Onawa stepped past the fallen bodies, checking for survivors, although she had little hope. Every time her gaze fell on a familiar face, sorrow filled her heart. Aurelia, the golden beauty of the clan; Whitestorm, an old dragon who'd survived for so long; Ebony, for as much as Onawa disliked her, it pained her to see so utterly lifeless; Marmalade, soft and motherly, protecting them till the very end....

The pain was unbearable, but she couldn't stop it from coming. She closed her eyes and tried to push the images away, but in the darkness were more nightmares to consume her.

She heard a groan, and immediately whipped around. "Soulflare!" She cried, rushing over. For a moment, hope filled her heart, but it soon fell once more. The wound across Soulflare's neck was hopeless. He wouldn't live for more than a few more minutes.

"Onawa...." The Wildclaw looked up at her, his eyes filled with pain. Despite this, he continued, "Look for the survivors... Kilandri... she managed to place a spell... put as many as she could to sleep so they'd look dead... not even a pulse. Look for her... Cinnamon, Sandstorm, and Avian."

Onawa was confused by Soulflare's words, mostly regarding the sleeping spell. Why those four? When would they wake up? Would they even wake up at all? How was she supposed to care for four dragons on her own? So many questions, but there was no time, so she simply nodded. She would have to think over it later.

Soulflare coughed. "I won't live for much longer... don't even try to argue otherwise. Isidar managed to escape... Kilandri foresaw that she would find shelter far away from here. As for you... she said you would continue the legacy of the clan. She... has faith in you. We are counting on you, Onawa...."

His eyelids were drooping. "You... in Sandstorm's stores... highly flammable...you must burn the battlefield. We cannot let an Emperor be born... it would tear apart... the City...."

Onawa understood what he meant, but she didn't want to do it. "You...you can't seriously be asking me...."

Soulflare gave her a steely glare. "I still rank above you, till my very last breath. Find the others - the ones I mentioned - then leave before the Fallen return. If they find you, the clan has no hope left. Go... I cannot bear to see... Marmalade become... a monster... do not fail...." His eyes were beginning glaze over.

With tears in her eyes, Onawa left her dying former leader. She managed to locate the four dragons Soulflare had mentioned, and found the strength to move them as far away as possible. As she worked, out of the corner of her eye, she could already see the corpses of Imperials slowly changing.

She ran to Sandstorm's little hole, fumbling through every single shelf he had. It took far too long, but she knew that it would be worth it.

"No... no... no... wait!" She picked up a bottle, uncorking it and giving it a whiff. She immediately recoiled, gagging at the smell. Ugh, where on earth did Sandstorm get this foul stuff? She shook her head. It didn't matter. What mattered was that it would catch fire, fast.

She ran back, careful not to spill any of the liquid on herself. Upon reaching the corpses, she popped off the cork and simply flung the liquid everywhere. Out of time, she threw the rest, including the bottle, onto the monstrosity that was rapidly growing.

Fire! She didn't have enough time. She looked around wildly, before spotting one of Candle's little ember wisps. She grabbed it, and with a short "Sorry about this!", she flung it behind her.

BOOM!

The explosion knocked her backwards. Dazed, she dimly recalled Sandstorm's words. "Highly flammable, but what a trade!" he'd exclaimed. "Too much could cause an explosion. Perfect for land mines!" They'd never had the chance to plant those mines, but in the aftermath of the explosion, Onawa could see why it would have made such a difference in the war.

Her ears ringing, she struggled back to her feet. The flames licked at her tail, and she cried out in pain. Run! her instincts told her, and her legs obeyed, carrying her far away from the burning field. On the very edge of it, she turned around for one last glimpse. Smoke billowed upwards, engulfing everything in a black dusty cloud. Deep from within, she could hear the spirits of the Imperials howling as they were freed from their bodies, burned to ash along with Onawa's clan mates.

Everything she had known, everyone she'd cared for, was gone. She was their last hope.

"Farewell, and may the gods light your path," Onawa whispered the customary blessing often used to send off their friends and loved ones. She turned, a tear trickling down her cheek, before running to where her friends were waiting.

The wind carried her words up and over the battlefield.

Thanks, Kilandri.

Onawa glared at her four friends. All had serene and calm looks on their faces, which only aggravated her further.

They were a fair distance away from the battlefield, in a forest nearby. For now, they were safe, hidden in the darkness of the night, but come morning and they'd be sitting ducks waiting for the Fallen to catch them.

"Yeah, thanks Kilandri. Thanks to all of you." She muttered, pacing around the clearing which overlooked the ocean. "I'm sure Onawa will be fine! Not only does she have to continue the legacy of the clan, she has to figure out how to lug four dragons around and keep both them and herself alive!" She imitated Kilandri's voice, admittedly rather poorly, partially due to the fact that that was not how Kilandri spoke at all. "She'll have no problem, I have faith in her! Well guess what, faith isn't getting me out of this mess!"

She flopped down on the ground. What was Kilandri thinking? She couldn't do this. This... this is too much.

Onawa turned her head to face the blue Fae in question. Even in her sleep, Kilandri had a fierce look on her face. Onawa could just imagine her waking up and snapping at her. What do you mean, you can't do it? You can, and you will! I don't care how you do it!

Onawa let out a half-laugh, half-sob. Less than a week ago, she'd dreaded facing Kilandri every evening, when her superior gave a report on her. Careless. Sloppy. Clumsy. And then Kilandri would give her a sharp glare, followed by scolding on how exactly Onawa should do things, and every correction would just frustrate Onawa even more, and she'd snap back at Kilandri, and then their usual argument would flare up. Why can't you do better? Try harder? Kilandri would ask. I didn't save you so you could laze around as everything is handed to you on a silver platter!

And Onawa would snarl back at her. I never asked you to save me! Maybe you shouldn't have, 'cause now I have to live with you! And she'd storm away in rage, then the process would just repeat again the next day.

What she'd give to return to those days, when she had someone to guide her, someone looking out for her. But there was no one there anymore.

Get up. Onawa's head rose up, as she looked around. "K-Kilandri?" She whispered, rising to her feet in hope.

No, you idiot. Look down.

Onawa looked down. A little blue creature looked up at her, its features contorted in annoyance. "A Water Sprite! Wow! Kilandri used to have one.... " Nostalgia washed over her once again.

Stop having a pity party for yourself! Don't you have something to do, like, oh I don't know, saving yourself and your friends? The Water Sprite glared up at her. Onawa's mouth twisted into a frown. "Excuse me, I have been thinking about that!" She defended. "I just... haven't came up with something yet! It doesn't mean I won't!"

Yeah, well, your friends — and you — will be dead by then. So let's get a move on, shall we? The sprite was obviously not in a good mood. Most of the sprites Onawa had met were friendly and playful, but she would've sworn that this one was the Shade itself's spawn, if it weren't for the bright blue eyes, squinted in a glare.

"First off, what are you even doing here, and why are trying to, ah, 'help' me?" Onawa narrowed her eyes in distrust. Yes, well, I don't have much of a choice. Old Tidepap sent me here because your friend Kilandri called in a favour. He could've sent one of the apprentices, but nooo, it had to be me, Ilaria. The sprite grumbled. Onawa was now positive it was a female, if there were even gender differences between sprites.

Her mind latched onto only one small part of what the sprite — Ilaria, she'd called herself? Onawa almost snorted at that, whoever had named her had obviously done the job very wrong; she was hardly cheerful or happy — had said. "Kilandri... called in a favour with the Tidelord? Whoa." Onawa didn't know her mentor had such a good relationship with the god of the Sea, their patron.

Ilaria rolled her eyes. Something about going way back — I don't know. Doesn't matter. Anyways, I brought some help, because you obviously need it. Seriously, why were you chosen by her as the last survivor?

Onawa was about to snap back, but the words died on her lips as the group fell into darkness, the sunlight blocked by an incomprehensibly large creature. "Oh...my.... " She whispered, in awe.

A Mantarune, yes. His name is Bruinen. Ilaria straightened, obviously smug that she'd managed to impress Onawa. Onawa wasn't paying attention to her though, transfixed by the creature who'd dove back into the ocean with an enormous splash.

Alright now, we don't have all day. The Fallen would probably have seen that. Now, where to? Onawa shook herself out of her trance. She stared at Ilaria blankly. "Um, what?"

Oh - my - you really didn't think this out did you? Ilaria shook her head in disgust. What was Kilandri thinking? You're obviously just a child. You don't know how to do anything; you might as well dig your own grave right now, to save someone else the trouble later.

Onawa snapped. She was tired of listening to her. "You know what? I've just lost my entire clan, had to burn all their bodies because the only other choice was to be responsible for unleashing an Emperor, have four friends who are depending on me to keep them alive, have the legacy of my clan to maintain, and now I have a sprite just waltz into my life and act like she rules the place, when she was basically kicked out of her own home as well! You know what, maybe I'd rather not have your help, because it's really just not worth having someone pour salt on my wounds just because they can. I hope you feel better because you got to tear down someone else. Now, if you don't mind, maybe I'll just get my own help."

She stormed away, in what direction, she didn't care. Maybe she should just go to the Fallen and turn herself in. It would be so much easier. What's the use of living if everyone you love is gone? She thought to herself bitterly.

A deep rumble made her turn. Bruinen was hovering just off the edge of the cliff, his flaps moving quickly to try and support him. On his back were the sleeping forms of Kilandri and the others. His runes glowed a little brighter, almost like he was trying to comfort her and assure her of his presence. She cracked a small smile.

Hey. Onawa's smile faded as the sprite's voice filled her mind once more. I think I saw a place that might do. I hope you're not afraid of ghosts, because it's in the Hewn City. It'll do well because no one will disturb you there, since most dragons don't like the place.

Ilaria fluttered next to her. After a few moments of hesitation, she continued. You know... I might want to explore outside the ocean for a while. The Keep does get boring after a while. I guess you're not such bad company, so I'll think I'll just tag along.

Onawa realised that that was pretty much the closest she was going to get to an apology. Ilaria did seem much less grouchy, and there was a hint of remorse in her voice. Onawa's mouth quirked up into a small smile once more. "I guess I could use the help. Plus, you've got a big friend there to back me up, so that's one perk."

They both laughed a little at this, and Onawa realised that maybe she wasn't so alone after all.
