Despite his taxing journey and previous night of sleeplessness, Kor still found himself sleeping lightly and fitfully with both the harrowing content of his letter and the threat of a murderer on his mind. His arsenal of weapons lay at his nestside, ready for any would-be assailant that tried to sneak up on him. Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately) no such being came, and he was unceremoniously broken from the grip of his nightmares by a thunderous sound that shook the very earth beneath him.
The drake scrambled to get his articles of clothing together and tools holstered in their proper place, and was met at the cavern's entrance by Salem. He was relieved to see her unharmed but troubled by the news she bore of Ilnae's demise. At the meeting Kor chatted and deliberated with the other dragons, perhaps seeming a bit more terse and serious than usual. He also noted that the fellow he had encountered in the woods had also managed to find his way to the encampment. Regardless of the circumstances he would find this killer, and he would make it back home safely.

Things were just getting worse for Shin, who really wasn't sure where to go from here. His magic reserves were still drained, he'd need at least a few more nights to fully replenish enough to shadow-walk back to the Glimwood, but the dragons gathered in this slap-dash settlement were dropping like flies. First a fire, then a collapsed cliff, and now everyone is eyeing ecah other with charged suspicion.
Shin's scales prickled at the sensation of eyes following his every move, trying and failing to focus completely on his shadow-weaving. Best try to avoid any conflict for now.

The clan wakes with some hope — nothing seems amiss in the morning, not at first. Unfortunately, their hope is quickly dashed, much like Ilnae among the rocks. There is little evidence towards the identity of the killer, but the clan’s consensus is that they cannot simply allow a killer in their midst, and with much regret, they finally decide that Runesoul must leave.
Runesoul had hardly settled in; her belongings are still somewhat scattered on the floor of the den she had hoped to call home. As dusk silently creeps over the sky, the distrustful stares of her clanmates follow her. Resolutely, she makes her slow way over to the entryway of her den, where a small group of clanmembers stand.
“She’s not the dragon you’re looking for,” Mythins informs them all defiantly before any of the others have the chance to speak. “Can’t you see that this is a mistake?”
“We hope that it isn’t,” is all Salem says, her voice quiet and her eyes downturned. “First Crawly, and then Ilnae … we’ve already lost too much.”
“Fine!” Mythins snaps. “I suppose Reverie had a point in leaving, if she wasn’t also killed. We’ll be going now. Come on, they clearly don’t want us here.”
As they fetch their things and depart, Mythins finds another sharp remark to hurl at the silently huddled group of dragons in front of their former den. “Good luck with finding the real killer.”

[emoji=rose] ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ [emoji=rose]
Reverie was somewhat on her way by dusk, and the farther behind she left the clan, the safer and more confident in her decision she’d felt. She almost caught herself feeling sorry for a few moments, but before she could dismiss that thought, she found herself sensing a presence behind her.
Surely it wasn’t the killer, tracking her down the entire time? The very thought made her scales prickle.
“Reverie,” called the Magist from behind her, “I’m not the killer, I promise. I’m only here to ask you to return to the clan — that is, you and Ilnae. Not only that — I might also have cookie dough on hand.”
“Isn’t Ilnae dead?” Reverie eyed the Magist skeptically, who nodded slowly in response.
“Not for long,” they assured her. “I will keep you safe, I promise.”
Reverie stared at the Magist for a while, her mind racing. There were many virtues to returning — she didn’t want the clan’s dreams to be troubled, as they surely would be without her considering that there was a killer on the loose. Besides, the Magist had personally sought her out. She must truly be needed. She couldn’t leave the clan in such a situation, even if her safety was on the line. Of course, there was the most important thing to be considered — the cookie dough.
She turned to Daydream, who simply blinked at her rather unhelpfully.
“Of course I’ll help,” Reverie answered the Magist, who seemed almost relieved at those words.
“Wonderful! Follow me.”
Ilnae awakened to the eyes of Reverie, Daydream, and the Magist peering down at her. Frantically, she attempted to ensure the illusion disguising her condition was still in place, but weakly fell back to the ground.
“It worked!” Reverie cheered, doing a small somersault in the air. “Ilnae! How do you feel?”
Ilnae attempted a cough, its bones rattling with the effort. “The killer—” it managed to rasp out, before a cough coursed through its body. Reverie fluttered towards it as if to comfort the undead Imperial for a minute in concern.
The Magist nodded. “You did encounter the killer, but it’s … alright now,” they responded, choosing their words carefully. “This is where we part ways. You should go back to the clan now, and it’s best you not mention me. I suspect the killer may still be lurking in the clan.”
With that, they retreated back into the shadows, presumably making their own way back to the clan.
When Ilnae had fully risen, with Reverie’s words of encouragement, it finally chanced a glance back towards where it had been awakened. Nothing remained but a faint trail of smoke rising from the clearing behind it.

[emoji=skull] ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ [emoji=skull]
The soft whirring of the filtration system in Vega’s aquarium drowns out most of the ambient sounds of the night, but it doesn’t drown out the soft plink that wakes Astrid up near midnight. She blinks groggily, looking around for the source of the noise.
Nothing looks amiss. Her den is just the way she left it when she settled in to rest a few hours ago.
She stretches before getting to her feet, shuffling groggily to the entrance of her den and looking outside. The trees glisten with runic energy, bathing the clan in blue and pink, and yet she doesn’t see a single dragon nearby.
All she can spot is a trail of glistening liquid, dribbled in a continuous line into the trees.
Everything about this screams suspicious. But a dragon could be in danger, especially after all of the death they’ve seen so far. Astrid hasn’t been able to prevent any of it yet, but if she could do something now...
The Skydancer steps out fully into the night air, following the trail. The scent of sugar fills the air. It nearly feels like a continuation of the dream she was just woken from.
The trail ends in a completely innocuous clearing, still without any dragons in sight. Astrid steps onto the bed of… mulch? No, on closer observation the clearing is covered in a mix of leaves and sticks, all dry enough to crunch between her talons.
As Astrid lowers her head to investigate further, the smell of sugar and leaves is covered by the smell of smoke. She lifts her head, but when she turns she finds that the twigs and leaves behind her have already rapidly caught aflame, fire leaping from small flickers to great tongues in an instant with such ready-ground fuel.
Before Astrid can so much as step back, the fire finds the ribbons draped across her body and laps hungrily up around her tail and wings. It doesn’t discriminate between leaves, twigs, ribbons, fur, and feathers. Fast-billowing smoke fills the air, and the blood-curdling shriek that rips from Astrid’s throat is almost immediately choked away.
~~~
The sun would rise the next morning on the shimmering (but quickly drying) trail to a charred clearing, coated in a blanket of ash. The cooling body of a nigh-unrecognizable Skydancer lies right in the middle of the bed of cinders.
The Nighttime
Reverie was somewhat on her way by dusk, and the farther behind she left the clan, the safer and more confident in her decision she’d felt. She almost caught herself feeling sorry for a few moments, but before she could dismiss that thought, she found herself sensing a presence behind her.
Surely it wasn’t the killer, tracking her down the entire time? The very thought made her scales prickle.
“Reverie,” called the Magist from behind her, “I’m not the killer, I promise. I’m only here to ask you to return to the clan — that is, you and Ilnae. Not only that — I might also have cookie dough on hand.”
“Isn’t Ilnae dead?” Reverie eyed the Magist skeptically, who nodded slowly in response.
“Not for long,” they assured her. “I will keep you safe, I promise.”
Reverie stared at the Magist for a while, her mind racing. There were many virtues to returning — she didn’t want the clan’s dreams to be troubled, as they surely would be without her considering that there was a killer on the loose. Besides, the Magist had personally sought her out. She must truly be needed. She couldn’t leave the clan in such a situation, even if her safety was on the line. Of course, there was the most important thing to be considered —
the cookie dough.
She turned to Daydream, who simply blinked at her rather unhelpfully.
“Of course I’ll help,” Reverie answered the Magist, who seemed almost relieved at those words.
“Wonderful! Follow me.”
Ilnae awakened to the eyes of Reverie, Daydream, and the Magist peering down at her. Frantically, she attempted to ensure the illusion disguising her condition was still in place, but weakly fell back to the ground.
“It worked!” Reverie cheered, doing a small somersault in the air. “Ilnae! How do you feel?”
Ilnae attempted a cough, its bones rattling with the effort. “The killer—” it managed to rasp out, before a cough coursed through its body. Reverie fluttered towards it as if to comfort the undead Imperial for a minute in concern.
The Magist nodded. “You did encounter the killer, but it’s …
alright now,” they responded, choosing their words carefully. “This is where we part ways. You should go back to the clan now, and it’s best you not mention me. I suspect the killer may still be lurking in the clan.”
With that, they retreated back into the shadows, presumably making their own way back to the clan.
When Ilnae had fully risen, with Reverie’s words of encouragement, it finally chanced a glance back towards where it had been awakened. Nothing remained but a faint trail of smoke rising from the clearing behind it.
The soft whirring of the filtration system in Vega’s aquarium drowns out most of the ambient sounds of the night, but it doesn’t drown out the soft
plink that wakes Astrid up near midnight. She blinks groggily, looking around for the source of the noise.
Nothing looks amiss. Her den is just the way she left it when she settled in to rest a few hours ago.
She stretches before getting to her feet, shuffling groggily to the entrance of her den and looking outside. The trees glisten with runic energy, bathing the clan in blue and pink, and yet she doesn’t see a single dragon nearby.
All she can spot is a trail of glistening liquid, dribbled in a continuous line into the trees.
Everything about this screams
suspicious. But a dragon could be in danger, especially after all of the death they’ve seen so far. Astrid hasn’t been able to prevent any of it yet, but if she could do something
now...
The Skydancer steps out fully into the night air, following the trail. The scent of sugar fills the air. It nearly feels like a continuation of the dream she was just woken from.
The trail ends in a completely innocuous clearing, still without any dragons in sight. Astrid steps onto the bed of… mulch? No, on closer observation the clearing is covered in a mix of leaves and sticks, all dry enough to crunch between her talons.
As Astrid lowers her head to investigate further, the smell of sugar and leaves is covered by the smell of
smoke. She lifts her head, but when she turns she finds that the twigs and leaves behind her have already rapidly caught aflame, fire leaping from small flickers to great tongues in an instant with such ready-ground fuel.
Before Astrid can so much as step back, the fire finds the ribbons draped across her body and laps hungrily up around her tail and wings. It doesn’t discriminate between leaves, twigs, ribbons, fur, and feathers. Fast-billowing smoke fills the air, and the blood-curdling shriek that rips from Astrid’s throat is almost immediately choked away.
~~~
The sun would rise the next morning on the shimmering (but quickly drying) trail to a charred clearing, coated in a blanket of ash. The cooling body of a nigh-unrecognizable Skydancer lies right in the middle of the bed of cinders.
This kill was written by natsinabucket, and the revive was written by Scorisyn.
We hope you like rotisserie chicken.
Astrid was a Civilian.
[tl;dr: The killer lured Astrid from her den by throwing a pebble at her window, allowing her to discover the conspicuous line of nectar they had trailed from her den to a clearing filled with kindling. Before Astrid could get her bearings, they set the kindling alight. ]

Something was horribly, terribly wrong. Not just the fact that once again it stood underneath the rising sun after her soul had gone dark, not the fact that its illusion of life had dissipated, not the fact that it had no idea what had happened while it was gone, not that it really had no idea what day it was. No. Those were problems for later. Later as in within the hour, preferably, but after the main sense of wrongness was taken care of. Something just didn't sit right with her. It wasn't that Ilnae had been brought back wrong, every little piece sat perfectly in place, her... necromancer? and her own magics had worked in tandem to mend fractured bones, reconnect tissues and restore her probably in better shape than she was in before. But still, something ached against her ribcage, something intangible.
That curl of smoke on the horizon didn't sit right with her. Alone, the smoke would have been of no issue, deserving of no inquiry. A number of harmless assumptions could be made. But Ilnae had passed by animals and dragons in worse condition than her own for the past few nights she remembers. The new bones sang of an untimely end, brought by malice, and not by mistake.
Going to investigate alone, however, would be ridiculous, considering how the last time that played out ended. It might not be as lucky to reform the next time. Ilnae grit her teeth, feeling the scrape of her molars deep in her skull. It picked itself up and tried to ensure her illusion was in place, but the dark blob of jelly that dripped from her skeletal claws reminded her that Ilnae was still lacking in that department. It would probably take longer for the magic to coalesce once more around her. Ilnae bit back a sigh. Asking for help was so much harder when you were dead.
Nonetheless, Ilnae pulled itself to the first clearing, where the living dragons slept, and took a breath into her withered lungs.
"I need someone to help. Something is wrong."
And although its voice lacked the resonance and clarity it once had, Ilnae was able to project it pretty well. The bout of coughing as fresh air made its way back out of the lungs was also projected pretty well.

The purple drake spent yet another evening tossing and turning in his nest, drifting lucidly between conscious and subconscious worry. How many days had passed since the first kill? Since he'd gotten Tianne's letter? How much time did she, or he, or anyone else around him have left??? He could leave right now. Get up, pack his things, sneak out, and be back home within a fortnight. But could he really just do that though? Just up and abandon the rest of the clan for dead? The adults maybe, but the hatchlings???
At some point in his torment the new day had begun to dawn. Kor woke once again to the first slivers of light trickling in through his cavern's entrance, and again they bore with them the smell of smoke. It was fainter this time. Further away, and missing the chemical bite that it held the previous day. His joints cracked stiffly as he rose to his feet, gathering his things before slowly chancing a peek outside at the rest of the camp. He appeared to be the only soul awake at this hour, as the silent ambience around him was punctuated only by the patter of tiny meteorite shards against the luminescent tree canopy, remnants from that evening's larger shower.
If the area was still quiet, then Kor reasoned that the killer may still be close by and unaware of his presence. He began to creep his way as quietly as he could towards the source of the smoke, through the grove toward a nearby clearing where the younger dragons had once enjoyed playing. He didn't get far before a familiar voice stopped him in his tracks. Ilnae??? No, that couldn't be right. She had been shattered into a million pieces yesterday. They had buried her bones and held a vigil and everything. And yet, as the guardian rounded a bend in the trees there she was, still looking rather ghastly and skeletal, but very much put-together and animated. He made eye contact with her for a moment, opened his mouth once but couldn't bring forth the words that he wanted to say.
What happened???
What are you doing here???
Where's Reverie???
What are you???
Instead Kor clamped his maw shut before he could be caught gawking and decided that surely he had seen weirder things in his travels? Instead of a volley of questions he offered just one, coupled with a greeting and what he hoped looked more like a warm smile than a tired, confused grimace.
"Good morning Ilnae, welcome back. Are you alright?"

For the third night in a row, Salem had a hard time getting to sleep. At this point she's just exhausted and not surprised to find another body. A study of the environment revealed that it was another death by fire, and she'd almost stepped in the nectar leading up to it.
She didn't expect to find both the missing hatchling and the Imperial victim from the night before alive once again. At least now there were only two victims, but there will be a third if nothing is done about the situation.
It seems routine by now. She has made herself the temporary leader of this clan and so she's the one that calls the meeting once again. Though she is tired, she does her best to look strong for the clan. She looked around at all the dragons gathering around, she was responsible for them.
What kind of a leader is she if she can't even catch a killer?
