Born during the time of the year when the festivities of the Greenskeeper Gathering bustled about Sornieth, Elwyn was always a spry, adventurous hatchling. He was the first to hatch of a clutch of three strong, healthy eggs. The biggest and most energetic of his clutch, he was always running around and doing something, be it chasing butterflies, exploring the territories close to his clan (with the supervision of a family member, of course), or trying to wrestle his two Mirror siblings - he was always conscious of his size though, and made sure to be gentle with his brother and sister whenever they play fought. Yet at the same time as he was playful, he was a shy young hatchling, always very close with his parents, especially his mother. Despite his playful personality, he never wanted to stray far from their sight, and made sure his clutchmates stayed close as well. Under the watchful eye of his mother, Conch, and father, Basic, he and his siblings grew and flourished, growing up surrounded by the love of their parents, family, and clanmates. He was always especially close to his nest-brother Ock, the two brothers nearly inseparable from one another. Perhaps due to the adventurous nature deep within him, however, Elwyn found his heart being tugged along by the call of the Search from a young age. He didn't understand the feeling at first, and was confused. Why was he suddenly being called to lands beyond his clan; the only place he'd known for his entire life so far, and the only place he'd ever wanted to know?

As time went on and these instincts grew stronger, Elwyn began to grow worried and distraught for the first time in his life, greatly upset by the instincts that drove him to leave his clan. His parents took instant notice that Elwyn was not his usual, playful self, exchanging a worried glance one sunny afternoon as his two siblings played and Elwyn himself, meanwhile, only lay in the shade with his head resting on his paws. Conch and Basic had not had a weak child in such a long time—was something wrong with their son, Basic fretted? Did he cause another child to be feeble and sickly? Conch reassured her beloved that nothing was his fault, but deep down, even the great Guardian was deeply worried for her son the more days went by where he did not act like his usual, cheerful self. He was eating, and he was growing as large and powerfully built as ever, yet he declined all of his brother and sister's attempts to get him to play with them and would only sit and watch, a worried and distracted look on his face, even ignoring the vibrant butterflies that fluttered around his snout as though inviting him to a game of tag. Conch knew then that she had to talk to her son, and Basic agreed.

About a week after Elwyn's strange behavior began, Conch approached him one morning, and asked him to take a walk around the Everbloom Gardens with her. Elwyn agreed with a small smile; he would never decline to spend some quality time with his mother. The two Guardians walked in silence for some time, admiring the beautiful flora and fauna around them, until Conch finally broke the silence herself:

"What has been bothering you, my son? You have not been yourself for some time now. Your father and I are very worried, and so are your brother and sister; is there something on your mind?"

Elwyn inhaled, trying to think of a way to explain it. But before he could control himself, he poured his heart out to his mother, telling her every last thing he'd been feeling as tears ran down his face. Conch pulled her young son close, allowing him to sob into her chest and gently stroking the back of his head as he told her about his feelings. When he finally finished, Conch pulled back, and smiled at him,

"My child," she spoke gently. "There is no reason to be so worried. You see, you are being called along by the destiny of the Search. Every Guardian like us has a charge; something or someone that we are called to protect and watch over to our final breath. There comes a time in every Guardian's life where we must leave the place where we were born, and go on a sacred journey to find that charge, so that we may find our true purpose in life."

Elwyn sniffled, rubbing his eyes as he blinked up at his mother. "B-But I don't want to leave you, Mama.... or Papa... or Ock and Imvelo!" he whimpered. "Why do I have to go on a Search? I want to stay here! You and Papa will be sad if I go!"

Conch still smiled at her son, and gently lifted him in her talons, holding him close. "I promise you that we will be okay. We will miss you, but we do not need to be apart forever. Going on your Search does not mean you abandon your family, my dear. It only means that you go on a journey to find what makes you feel fulfilled, and perhaps even help others find what they were missing. I know that it seems scary, but Glademother will watch over you. And your father and I know that you can do it. Come on, then. It's getting late, we'd best be back home - and I'll race you back to the camp!"

Ever since his mother's talk, Elwyn had felt much, much better. He began playing with his siblings again, and even told them about the Guardian's Search. He was back to his usual, happy self, the call of the Search no longer feeling like a burden, but rather a blessing. He was a Guardian—this was his calling, his duty: to protect! Elwyn stayed with Meristema for a few more months, and no one pressured him about it. Conch and Basic knew he would embark on his journey when he was ready. And soon, that time finally came.

Elwyn stood on the edge of the jungles of the Everbloom Gardens, looking out to the rest of the Labyrinth. He bode farewell to his father, clutchmates, and older siblings, before Conch travelled with him to the edges of the Gladekeeper's domain.

"This is it, my son," Conch rumbled, sitting down beside the young Guardian, whose beard had now just begun to grow, though he was still only just below shoulder height compared to his mother. She reached into a satchel strapped around one of her massive, powerful wings, and unrolled an old map of Sornieth. setting it out on the ground in front of the two dragons.

"This is where we are now," she explained, pointing with a claw to the outermost reaches of the Viridian Labyrinth. "Is there anywhere that you feel like your instincts are telling you to go?" Elwyn studied the map for a few moments, furrowing his brow. He then raised a claw, pointing to a section of the old, dog-eared parchment.

"That yellow place," he said. "I feel like I should go there first."

"Ah, the Sunbeam Ruins," replied Conch. She smiled. "You have a sister that lives in a large clan by the sea there, called the Lumiera Kingdom. If you need to take a break during your journey, you can find them and ask for her, and she will look after you." The Guardian felt relieved that her son would be going somewhere there was family nearby; so many of her worries were alleviated in that moment. She still feared terrible things happening to her children if they left her arms, but she knew that she could not selfishly keep them bound to her forever, especially if their destiny led them elsewhere.

"One last thing, my child." Conch reached into her pack once again, and pulled out an enchanted globe of Sornieth, showing each elemental region in exquisite detail. Small, animated clouds even magically floated along its surface, as though it really were a miniature version of their planet. "I want you to keep this with you," she told him, handing the globe to her child, before taking off the satchel, which was also packed with a steady supply of food and water enough for a fews weeks' journey, and giving it to him as well, rolling up the map and placing it back inside before doing so. "That way, wherever you are, you can always find your way back if you need to."

Elwyn smiled as he stared at the enchanted globe in his claws, tearing up, and reached up to give Conch one last hug. The powerful dragon smile warmly, wrapping both gargantuan wings around Elwyn's back, a couple of tears falling from her eyes. "Farewell, my precious one. I love you. You will always be welcome to return at any time, but you must remember to always listen to your heart above all, even if you don't understand."

Elwyn's eyes sparkled, warmly beaming back up at his mother. "Thank you, Mother. I love you too. I'll never forget you, or anyone back home. Thank you for everything..."

And with that, the two dragons departed; Conch turning and travelling back into the forest, pushing aside her worries and praying for her son's safe travels, and Elwyn lifting into the air on his own powerful wings and soaring toward the place where the light shone the brightest, setting off on his foredestined Search at long last, his heart alight with a new hope, determination, and most of all... an endless courage.
