“Come on, slow poke! Keep up!” Wisteria cried over her shoulder, laughing as she saw her little brother, who was twice the size of her now, struggling to lumber after his lithe, athletically-built sister. “We’re supposed to get to the clan before next week!”

“Hey! You know you’re faster than me!” Elwyn cried with amusement, laughing back. “Cheater!” Wisteria squealed as the Guardian reared up on his hind legs and batted her down with a single swat, gently pinning her below his paw. “Oi! Who’s the cheater now?!” she retorted, wheezing through her laughter as she reached up to bat at his chin. Elwyn chuckled, releasing her and stepping back, his tail gently lashing. “Come on. Race you the rest of the way back. I’ll win this time!”

“In your dreams!” Wisteria cried, and the two siblings took off through the snow, laughing and giggling all the while.

It had been a joyous day in Meristema. The siblings’ winter visit had not been an expected one, and they were joyously welcomed and embraced by old friends and family members alike. Many of them remarked how much little Elwyn, who was such a small fledgeling when he’d left, had grown into such a handsome, confident dragon. When asked, he’d informed them that he had not yet found his charge, but he was met with encouragement by his Guardian relatives that he would when the time was right.

Their mother and father were the last ones they visited, as they wanted to surprise them the most. They found Conch and Basic snuggled together in their den, and waited for them to awake. Conch did first, then her mate, and the two of them were shocked and overjoyed to see their children— Wisteria, now all grown up, and Elwyn getting close, waiting outside for them. It was a joyous, tearful reunion as the couple embraced their children and they all shared stories about how things had been in their respective clans and how they had all been faring. As the family talked, three little faces poked out of the den behind them, blinking and watching in curiosity. One of them, a little Guardian with a bright blue belly, stared at his older siblings in awe, before deciding to crawl outside to get a better look. As soon as his feet touched the snow, however, he let out a squeak, not liking the feeling of the icy chill against his paws one bit. He ran to the nearest big dragon he saw for warmth, and tucked himself against Elwyn, burrowing under one of his arms.

Elwyn blinked in surprise, staring down at the hatchling. His own eyes widened with awe, and their gazes met. This little dragon hadn’t even hatched a full day ago, Elwyn could tell. He was so... tiny. Elwyn knew he was big, but he suddenly felt gargantuan and unwieldy in the presence of the small Guardian, who blinked innocently up at him with big, bright green eyes.

“Aww. Baby siblings!” the distractible Wisteria cried, her face alight with excitement. She abandoned her conversation in favor of bounding to the den to meet the other two newly hatched dragons; a teal-bellied Guardian and a Mirror who looked just like Basic. They unsteadily toddled up to her, sniffing at her with curious squeaks, while the older Mirror scooped them into her arms. “Awww! They’re so cute! They’re so tiny! They look just like—”

Elwyn did not hear his sister’s gushing about their other two new siblings. His gaze was locked onto the quiet, shy little Guardian before him. The little dragon squeaked softly, reaching up to place one of his tiny talons on Elwyn’s snout.
The larger Guardian let out a low rumble, his eyes sparkling as he smiled, while his younger brother had the same awed expression, pushing his nose against Elwyn’s.

Conch and Basic had watched on with pride and amusement, before the former’s gaze drifted over to Elwyn. The pride in Conch’s eyes grew when she saw her son’s expression, and she chuckled, gently nudging her mate’s shoulder. “Look, my dear. It seems our little Elwyn has found his charge.”

⬩ ⬩ ⬩

It was difficult to say goodbye to sweet little Skylar. Conch had never let one of her babies go so early. Wisteria and Elwyn reassured their mother constantly that he would be well loved and cared for, and Conch knew that she couldn’t tear Elwyn away from the charge he found in his little brother, nor could Elwyn stay here forever, as much as she’d love him to. Eventually, she finally agreed, watching her precious children prepare to leave with a wistful smile, Basic leaning against her side in reassurance. Wisteria and Elwyn had stayed with their family for three days, but sadly, they could not stay for any longer—the journey back to the Southern Icefield was a far longer, more difficult one than travelling back to the Sunbeam Ruins even would have been, and they needed to leave as early as possible. The siblings said their goodbyes to their parents, friends, and the rest of their relatives, before turning to the skies and lifting off to depart back to their found home.

⬩ ⬩ ⬩

In Lumiera, Skylar was welcomed and embraced by everyone who met him. The shy little Guardian was overwhelmed by so much attention, and would turn and try to hide his face in Elwyn, who carried his baby brother around in the warmth and safety of his scarf, whenever someone new came to see him. He enjoyed whenever someone would come over to pat his head or hold him, though, and the clan’s resident carpenter and toymaker Noel, a fellow dragon from Meristema, even crafted a brightly-colored toy for him shaped like an Undertide dragon. It’s his most prized possession, and he always carries it with him, hugging it close for comfort when there’s no one around to carry him and snuggle up with. Elwyn is never far away, though, and Skylar is always perfectly content to snuggle into the warmth of his big brother’s arms. True to the promise made to Conch, there’s never a moment the little Guardian doesn’t feel loved.

Conch and Basic are snuggled in their den against the winter chill, so warm that frost outside could almost be forgotten. Warm enough even for their eggs to want to hatch.

The moving of the eggs woke Conch and Basic from their morning slumber, and they curled more tightly together so the children wouldn't even feel a cold breeze when they emerged.

Two of the three began to crack at the same time, but the one with the bright blue belly freed himself completely first. Even with the efforts of his parents, the warmth of the nest was no match for the warmth of the egg. He squeaked in dismay and immediately tried to burrow under his mother's belly.

His sister tumbled out shortly after, and appeared more interested in what she could see over any cold she might feel. Primarily her brother's wiggling tail which she attempted to bat with her paw and fell over. She swatted at it from the safer position of laying down.

The last announced himself as he arrived in the nest, sitting amongst the eggshell with a loud squeak as if to say 'look! I've done it!'

His parents and clutchmates did look at the smallest but bright-eyed dragon.

"Oh, darling," Conch said to her mate. "He's the spitting image of you!"
