Quests & Challenges

It was a typical day for Jubi, Neptune and Bethlan. They had just finished hunting in preparation for the winter and after dropping of their bounty, they were ready to settle in for the night. Jubi was busy sharpening her claws, something she did after every hunt, Neptune started working on a seashell necklace and Bethlan was too lazy to do anything. She nestled into a pile of blankets and pillows until only her tail was visable.

Suddenly into the silence, they heard a booming voice:

“Children. Do not be afraid. I mean you no harm.”

Betlan startled so badly, she got tangled into the blankets trying to see who was yelling so loudly. When she managed to free herself and poked her head out from under a pillow, she didn't see anyone. Jubi sat frozen with a claw in the air and Neptune had crushed one of her seashells. They shared a look, making sure none of them had imagined it.

“Listen carefully. The shade is spreading. I know this to be true although you might not yet see the signs. We need more warriors to fight this evil. I have been following your journey closely and I am proud of what you have acomplished together. I have chosen my champions, but to be strong, they need to be three. Three like you are. I regret putting this burden on you, but it must be done. I ask you to go back to the shade infested lands for eggs. My champions are no good to me on their own, even though granting them war animals made them stronger. I have told them of their mission. Now you know yours as well. I will grant you a short time of peace, but once the year comes to end, so will your rest. You will all be rewarded greatly once this task is complete. Do not fail me.”

While they did not see anything in their den with their eyes, they felt a great presence leave. After a moment of quiet, the three dragons all started talking at the same time. Hearing voices in your head is totally normal if you are a prophet, but none of them were. They also didn't think it likely that they all went insane at the exact same moment. Eventually Neptune spoke up. “What if that was one of the Eleven?” The other two dragons looked at her with disbelief written on their faces. “We don't know what they sound like, but what else can mind talk to three dragons at the same time? Not to mention that the voice also talked to the little dragons, it sent them the familiars and it has knowledge of the shade.” The others had nothing to say to that.

The next morning, the trio talked to the youngsters about the voice. They all confirmed that they had been hearing it too. They did not want to share what they were told, but they said the voice was right; 40 more eggs were needed. They could not start fullfilling their part of the mission until that was done and there were twenty teams of three. One for each shade infested area. Jubi, Neptune and Bethlan were not happy, but going against the wishes of a Deity was not an option. The Eleven never talk to ordinary dragons. To be chosen by one of them for a task, was a great honor and a great burden as well. The trio vowed to put the mission out of their minds and decided to enjoy their break as much as possible.

Because in a few months time, they would go hunting. Again...
