Assuming you're asking about the daily maintenance at midnight, this is just normal routine backend maintenance to keep the site running smoothly and is nothing to worry about. It happens every day from 00:00 to 00:30.
Other maintenances depend; sometimes they're also routine backend maintenance, sometimes they're fixing something wrong. Usually it's routine.

@Roryy And just very sometimes they're adding new content, big new updates usually require/are heralded by a longer than usual maintenance period outside the routine midnight.
