ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome tend to get misdiagnosed as each other. So your Asperger's might look a lot like ADHD, or you might actually have ADHD (although, because your dad has Asperger's it is most likely Asperger's because there seems to be some genetic link).

Just talk with your therapist about it, maybe bring it up with your parents because the correct diagnosis helps so much. I'm sure they will understand if you voice your concerns.

I stim a lot! I rock when I'm sitting sometimes, I touch/rub my skin a lot, i mess with my hair, I hand flap or various hand movements.
I sway or spin a lot, and I shake my head.

Hello there! I have Asperger's as well and I wasn't diagnosed for years, making shopping for food and clothing utter hell. Ugh. I also have a mood problem or something, in that I experiece emotions incredibly intensely and it's pretty awful when I get down on myself. But I'm surviving.

Some of my interests/things I'm fixated on are:
  • Art, digital and traditional.
  • Music, playing it and listening to it.
  • Animals, nature, space and rocks.
  • Video games of all kinds.
  • HTTYD.
  • Flight Rising.
  • Dragons and fantasy in general.

I'd love to meet some other people with these interests! :D

@Colic I stim a lot, too

It's hard for me to stay still if I'm not focusing on anything, so I tend to bounce either my shoulders or my knees. Also, I love swinging on swingsets, which is why I go to the park so often.

I don't know what I'm going to do when I go to collage next fall and there are no playgrounds in my area [to my knowledge]

I suspect that I'm autistic, but my situation is a bit odd--I wasn't diagnosed in Hawaii (I was taken to a specialist for small children when I was 16 and since I have friends and am doing alright in school they didn't diagnose me), but I was diagnosed in California (my step-mother is a psychiatrist and most of my family members on my Dad's side are doctors of some sort). I'm trying to explain to my mom that I can barely function at the mall for an hour without my ability to talk and respond quickly being diminished. Seriously, if I spend an hour or so in a crowded place I somewhat lose the ability to talk, really. Mom will ask me a question and I'll sit there for a couple of minutes trying to decode it and then figure out what to say in return. Like, she also has to remind me all the time of social conventions; I'll also say something and it'll feel as if she got angry for no reason.

My special interests are:
  • Pokemon
  • Languages, specifically the different idioms
  • Idioms and the origins of them
  • Dragons
  • Dinosaurs
  • Ace Attorney
  • Final Fantasy 7
  • Kingdom Hearts (esp Organization XIII)
  • Grammar
  • Patterns in numbers and the elements
  • The World Ends with You
  • TvTropes

Does anyone else get these periods of time when they don't feel that anything's real? As in, I, one morning, wasn't 'aware' that sticking my hand in the toaster would hurt? Then sometimes I can forget my own age and my own body in the mirror doesn't seem as if it's mine.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to change a stim? Right now I have the problem of pacing and the thing where I have the urge to pick my head and both are kinda getting painful. My legs are sore. I have this gummy eraser that I fiddle with but it's gotten pretty dirty. Otherwise I have this bouncy hand or leg thing, but that isn't enough. I need to move and it's getting really irritating.

Weh.

The feeling of things not being real is called dissociation. It could also be depersonalization. It's not related to autism specifically but you can do some research on the terms.

Changing stims is hard, but if you try to subsitute a similar less harmful stim for the stim you want to fade, that should help. Especially if it's a stim you enjoy more.

Hi, I'm not diagnosed but that's mostly because I've heard how hard it is to get diagnosed as an adult and I don't want to go through that, especially when I'm trying to focus on school. Though my sister is a psychologist and says there is no doubt that I have aspergers.

I don't have interests as much as I have intense fixations, though I do like fantasy and anthropology and it's been enough years that I can probably call it an interest. I love creating fantasy worlds with history and lore stretching thousands of years.

My newest obsession is gardening/permaculture. I'm hoping this one will actually be useful, unlike the time I became obsessed with cat food...

I'm incredibly sensitive to noise and actually dropped out of high school because I couldn't handle being in a classroom for very long without breaking down. I can't even listen to music most of the time, which sucks because it's the only thing I know of that can successfully block out noise.
