Flight Rising Discussion

Discuss everything and anything Flight Rising.
TOPIC | Why does FR prevail?
The fact that getting and customizing a dragon is easy! It's so easy to get really pretty dragons and good-looking apparel for cheap. The barrier of entry being so low is a great way to get people hooked. Of course there's still challenges on FR like really niche colors/G1s/Oldies collecting, but those are self-imposed.

A lot of other petsites have a huge divide between the beginner/free stuff and the premium stuff, which IMO is a turnoff. It also puts a divide on the community, with people who can afford to spend a lot of time or RLC having a much different experience than someone who can't. FR having a freely tradeable premium currency is also super important to how well the economy functions and feels.

Imagine if, starting off, you could only have the four starter breeds and common genes. Everything else is locked behind (untradeable) gems or grinding in the coliseum for hours. Would you have stuck around?

There is no secret sauce or special ingredient. Flight Rising has cool dragons, a stable economy, and premium currency is easy as hell to get if you're f2p (although, please still support things you love, but only if you can)

It's no surprise that FR is still going strong and probably stronger than ever.

Does it have 4-7k users? I look at the Users Online and it says ~1500 users and a lot of guests. Which is impressive there are that many people playing at any given time.

This is the first and likely only pet site I'll ever use.

I'm here after all these years because of the devs, I stay for the devs and the respectful, open way they interact with the userbase. They admit mistakes, they compromise, they stick to their convictions when they need to, and I trust the future of Flight Rising is in good hands.

I've swore off subscriptions and buying digital items, so the fact that premium currency isn't locked behind cash-only payments is a huge boon for me.

Besides kickstarter Imperial scrolls, no dragons are actually limited, y'know, the main draw of the website: DRAGONS. There's no mad dash for a 500/500 scroll up for $$$ only on Black Friday to never again be released. If people started scalping dragon breeds I'd bounce out of here so fast.

Another huge thing is that players are limited to one account per person, so I always feel that I'm on equal footing with everyone else. It's a community rather than a competition, and whenever I grind to unlock a few more slots it feels impactful rather than being only a drop in the ocean compared to a hypothetical user who's managing 10+ accounts to maximize the fun out of it. It also lowers the amount of throwaway accounts that would be created just to troll.

And I admire the direct artist-to-custom skin pipeline, which also doesn't require pure cash to participate in. It more than makes up for the slow rate of releases of new content, because there could be dozens of fancy new looks in a week. I'm not an artist and I've never submitted a skin so my view is limited, but I also feel like artists are respected and encouraged here, which makes for a silly and creative bunch.

Then personally, I will always like the forum layout. It feels relaxed, more thoughtful, and there's space to breathe.

For me the number one thing is there aren't negative aspects to the game. Dragons don't die if they are not fed or when they lose in the coli. Food doesn't rot. There is unlimited inventory space so you never lose or have to get rid of the stuff you worked hard to obtain. You can go on vacation or take a hiatus without fear of losing your stuff or having your account wiped from the servers.

A secondary thing is that you can log in and just do a little thing here or there or you can spend all day on a project.

In addition to all other comments, it's also simpler in a way? Like I see a lot of mutations/gene layering/catalogues of special items for even just breeding whathaveyou on other petsites, but fr sticks to a simpler system.

Though I've been on here for a while now so maybe I'm biased haha

Flight Rising also just has a lot of future things to look forward to. Its 10+ years into its release but there's still stuff coming out that feels fresh along with awaited revamps to old things I'm always looking forward to when they'll drop.

Pretty much everything mentioned, but some of the big things for me is how it's relatively easy to play, there aren't any major consequences if you want to take a break from the game for a little while, the game doesn't push transactions on you (which is part of why it's one of the few games I ever spend money on), and there are new things being added regularly.

Regarding forum games, please only select dragons who have familiars - those are the permanent residents of my lair. Feel free to look through the hibernal den, too
A lot of the points that I've thought of have been addressed already. But recapping doesn't hurt, eh?

  • Constant updates. Ex. I enjoyed Pixel Cat's End, but eventually burned out as updates were slow. Not that slow updates are bad, they just don't really fit for a site like this.
  • The only punishment you get for inactivity is your energy level dropping, nothing else. Your dragons don't die, your account isn't automatically locked, etc. And if you miss out on event items, there's the chance to buy them from others.
  • The only RL purchasing that you can do is to buy gems. With some sites/games, some things from their stores are for an additional purchase instead of premium currency.
  • There isn't a VIP system that would restrain you from getting something.
  • The room of customization of your pets (dragons) is immense and free-form, let it be with genes, apparel, or skins/accents.
  • The developers have said to not incorporate NFTs nor AI in any way. It's scarily easy for a site/game to turn to NFT in hopes it'll bring them cash (unsurprisingly, it gives them negative attention instead).
  • Adblocking, alongside turning the site's theme with extensions, are allowed.
